“no matter how good things get in this world, it’s all Egypt! There will never be enough gold chains, fine linen, praise, adoration, or anything else to satisfy the yearning that God has placed in us. Only his presence in the Land of Promise will satisfy his people.”

One part of Jesus’ crucifixion (and the events leading up to it) that I haven’t really ever paused to think about is in John 18.

Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane at night, when Judas, a large group of soldiers, and religious officials come to arrest Him.

Along with the army of men, they brought lanterns, torches and weapons, clearly expecting there to be a battle or at least some resistance in arresting Jesus.

Instead they are met with none of that but a man who comes out in plain sight, willing to be arrested.

“Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to him, went out and said to them, ‘who is it that you are seeking?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth’, they said.”

It’s the next part I’ve missed:

Jesus answers, “I am He”.

At those words, all these men “stepped back and fell to the ground”. Not because Jesus was intimidating, but because His mere breath speaking His divine identity makes them collapse.

The holiest of names.
The God whose glory is beyond our comprehension.

Just as God spoke to Moses when Hs asked God for His name, “And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM."

I’m just reminded, as I prepare my heart for Holy Week and Easter, that Jesus didn’t lose His life.

He surrendered it.

With one word He could have defeated all those men. He easily could have escaped. He could have killed them all.

They couldn’t even stand up at the sound of His voice.

But He laid His life down, voluntarily.

He didn’t “accept His fate” because He had to. He chose to initiate His death.

And it always comes back to this..

He did it for us.
Chose it for us.
Loved us enough to push His power aside and die a humiliating, excruciating death.

He could have done it differently.
But He never would have.

He’s the good shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep.

** One of my favorite things I’ve ever created is this printable Holy Week guide that takes you through the scriptures of each day of Holy Week- following Jesus’ journey to the Cross and His resurrection. If you’re interested, here is the link! (It’s a PDF!)

“If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:10-11

Studying John 15, I realized how our joy is closely related to our obedience to God.

To remain in His love is to keep His commands. The result is that His joy will be in us, and our joy will be complete.

You see, we cannot fully enjoy His love while also playing with sin. There is confusion in us when we do that– we love Him yet do not love Him enough to obey, and we love our sin yet still get the conviction and awareness that what we are doing is wrong.

So we become joyless casual followers of Jesus.

The solution is not to be sinless, for it is impossible to do that on this side of eternity. The solution is not to willfully sin. We need to have the same prayer as David, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)

We no longer embrace sin, but by His grace, we will fight it off.

Then our joy will be complete. There’s no joy compared to knowing that our friendship with God is not hindered by our guilt and shame.
