It is simple and easy. Why should Christians say The Lord’s Prayer every day?
1. It unites all Christians throughout time and space into one family with one common Father, who belongs to all (Our Father). This means that however awkward or different our brothers and sisters in Christ may be to us, they remain part of the family of the Church. The prayer is also used by ALL denominations, and so brings us closer to Our Lord’s wish that “they may all be one”.
2. It is the perfect pattern of prayer. It was given to us by Christ Himself, and includes praise (hallowed by thy name), petition (give us this day our daily bread), forgiveness (and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us), and protection (and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil).
3. JESUS TOLD US TO. If being a Christian means we are obedient to the will of God, a will most perfectly expressed in the teaching of the incarnate Son of God, then we must use this prayer. Jesus said “when you pray, pray like this”, not “if you pray”!
Try and say The Lord’s Prayer every single day, because, as St Cyprian wrote in his Treatise on the Lord’s Prayer, “It is a loving and friendly prayer to beseech God with His own word, to come up to His ears in the prayer of Christ”.
