On the final day of his visit to the United Kingdom, Mawlana Hazar Imam met with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales at Kensington Palace in London.

The meeting brought to a close a momentous week in which the global Jamat commemorated the first anniversary of Hazar Imam’s ascension to the Ismaili Imamat.

Mawlana Hazar Imam was welcomed to 10 Downing Street yesterday by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Sir Keir Starmer. They discussed strengthening cooperation on international development and humanitarian initiatives, promoting pluralism and interfaith relations.

Earlier in the day, Hazar Imam and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the United Kingdom and the Ismaili Imamat, marking a new chapter in a long standing institutional partnership.

Signed at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London, the agreement renews our commitment to work together to tackle global priorities, including climate change, empowering women and girls, and driving economic growth, and establishes official representation between the two parties with a joint coordinating committee.

Since 1973, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of development agencies established by the Ismaili Imamat, has partnered with UK agencies, such as the FCDO and British International Investment, as well as organisations like The King’s Trust International, on development projects in Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East. The institutions built through their collaboration positively impact more than 15 million lives annually.

Institutions of the Ismaili Imamat based in the UK include the Aga Khan Foundation (UK), established in 1973; The Institute of Ismaili Studies, established in 1977; and The Aga Khan University - Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, founded in 2002. These organisations are based at the Aga Khan Centre in London, a place for education, knowledge and cultural exchange. Along with its library, gallery and public tours programme, the institutions at the Aga Khan Centre work together to bridge the gap in understanding about Muslim cultures, address the root causes of poverty, and connect the public to global development issues.

The Ismaili community has lived in the UK for more than 60 years and contributes actively to the strength and prosperity of the country.

This morning, Mawlana Hazar Imam graced the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Channel Islands Jamats with didar.

The Mukhi of London Darkhana submitted bayʿa to the Imam on behalf of the Jamat and Naushad Jivraj, President of the Ismaili Council for the UK, delivered a loyalty address.

A series of three gifts were presented to the Imam. Members of the Jamat had collectively prepared an art installation—the Shukrana Mosaic—in which they reflect on the blessings in their lives, expressed through drawings, words, and colour. They also pledged acts of kindness in service of others, while young murids aged 8-14 shared stories about their lives for Hazar Imam’s sons Prince Irfan and Prince Sinan.

As Hazar Imam departed the Didar Hall, young volunteers and Jamati leaders gathered to bid him farewell. He later addressed interfaith couples before departing the venue.

Earlier in the day, Hazar Imam called upon the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan at City Hall, where they discussed the work of Imamat Institutions based in London.

On the second day of his visit to the United Kingdom, Mawlana Hazar Imam spent much of the day at the Ismaili Centre in London, where he granted two youth mulaqats in the intimate setting of the Darkhana prayer hall.

Later in the day, Hazar Imam returned to the Centre to meet with Jamati leaders at an institutional reception, in which he thanked attendees and their families for their service to the Jamat and wider society.

The Ismaili Centre was buzzing with activity throughout the day, as volunteers worked non-stop to ensure today’s events ran smoothly.

Tomorrow, Hazar Imam will grace the UK, Ireland and Channel Islands Jamats with didar.
