Relying on reason as our guide, we promote the spiritual well being of all. We provide a welcoming fellowship to facilitate the search for truth and meaning. We are a member fellowship of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).

Sunday August 30 - PICNIC!!

Please join us for the revival of our UU fellowship picnic on Sunday, August 30 at Linn Run State Park (Adams Falls Picnic Pavilion). At our normal service start time of 10:30 AM, Bethany Snyder, a newer member of our UUFLV Worship Committee, will start with ringing the singing bowl and lighting a battery operated chalice at the pavilion. The service will also include a Backpack Blessing in recognition of the beginning of the school year. All members and friends (not just children) are encouraged to bring a backpack, lunch bag, or work briefcase to be blessed.

Please bring a dish to share with the group. Paper products (plates, napkins, cups, and silverware) will be provided. Also plan to bring your own drinks. We will plan to eat between 11:30 AM - noon. You may also want to bring your preferred can of bug spray, as the gnats have been very active lately as the summer comes to an end.

PLEASE NOTE: A Zoom option will not be available for this Sunday’s service.
Cell phone service is very limited within Linn Run State Park.

Here are the directions to the pavilion where the picnic will take place. If you have any questions about driving to the pavilion please reach out to the state park office at 724-238-6623 or [email protected].

From Ligonier, take US Route 30 East for two miles. At the intersection of Route PA 381, turn right. At the small town of Rector, turn left onto Linn Run Road. GPS users please use this address: 182 Linn Run Road, Rector, PA 15677.
There will be a large Linn Run State Park sign on your right side when you have entered Linn Run State Park. The first parking area on the left is Adam Falls, marked clearly with a sign. Take a left into the Adam Falls parking area and cross the wooden vehicle bridge over Linn Run. Please be aware that the bridge and roads are also open to pedestrians.
After you cross the bridge, drive up the gravel hill. On your left is the parking area to the pavilion. It is equipped with electricity, ADA accessible restrooms, and has lots of shade. There are also several trails and the creek for folks to explore during and after the picnic. We hope you will join us for this fun event!

Sunday August 23 - Water Communion

This Sunday, August 23, Sarah Zelazny will lead our fellowship in an intergenerational water communion service. Please bring water from your travels this summer to bring and share as part of this special UU ceremony. We will have water available for those who forgot to bring or collect their own or may not have been able to easily access a water source during their summer travels.
Childcare will not be available this Sunday. We hope to see you there!

REMINDER: There will not be a service at our UU fellowship this Sunday, August 16. Instead, we are encouraging our members and friends to attend the PFLAG Potluck Picnic at Pavilion E at Hempfield Park in Greensburg, which starts at 2 PM. Food will be served at 3 PM- please bring a dish to share. It is a FREE event, and there will be entertainment, resource tables, raffles, games, and for all ages. Hope to see many of you there!

Sunday August 9 - The Astonishing World

Summary: "Whatever else we might think of this world," stated Polish poet and Nobel laureate Wisława Szymborska, "It is astonishing." We are living in times where, moving from crisis to crisis, it can feel like everything is an emergency. Overwhelmed with bad news in the world and struggles in our own lives, we become deadened inside, desensitized. How can we find our sense of wonder? How can we regain the motivation to act, to believe that our actions might actually make a difference? When we allow ourselves to be astonished by the everyday wonders we encounter, we receive the beautiful chance to regain our lost connection with the divine - and with one another.

Dr. Jeannine M. Pitas is a poet, writer, Spanish-English translator, teacher, immigrant rights activist, hiker, singer, dancer, cancer survivor, sometimes-dutiful daughter, and sometimes-devoted friend. She lives in Swissvale and enjoys the beautiful ride out to Saint Vincent College, where she teaches in the English department and makes lots of friends by loudly shouting "Go Bills!"

Sunday August 2 -

Rev. Tasha Brownfield will speak this Sunday, August 2. Through a live drag transformation and personal storytelling, Rev. Tasha will invite our fellowship into a theology of embodiment, contradiction, and collective belonging. This sermon will challenge binaries of sacred and profane, minister and performer, calling us to recognize the divine in all forms of becoming. Together, we will ask: What are we ready to reveal, and who are we ready to make room for?

NO CHILDCARE will be available this Sunday. Rev. Tasha wants to share that children were present and engaged at both UU Smithton and First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh when she shared this service with those congregations. The message was well received by both parents and the kids. She will have a mirror on the pulpit with her and will be talking about drag and Unitarian Universalism while doing her drag make up live. It’s wrapped into the theme of transformation and becoming, so it’s very accessible for all ages. She will not be lip-syncing or performing, but it is a sermon with live make up, like watching a YouTube video of someone doing their makeup while telling a story.

Rev. Tasha Brownfield, M.Div., UUSCM, is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, spiritual care practitioner, educator, and sacred performance artist. A native of the Appalachian region, they currently serve as Senior Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Smithton, PA, and as a staff chaplain at Johns Hopkins Hospital, specializing in outpatient oncology and multi-disciplinary care. They also teach philosophy and religious studies at Seton Hill University. Endorsed by the Unitarian Universalist Society of Community Ministers, Rev. Tasha’s ministry extends beyond parishes, hospitals, and universities, to protest lines, q***r bars, international talks and lectures, and drag performances.

Good afternoon everyone. I wanted to send a reminder that our August commitment to the Ligonier Food Pantry is for 50 soup--can be flip top cans, instant soup or kits. We need to have them to the Fellowship by August 16 as the pantry takes place on August 22. However, remember that we don't have a service at the Fellowship on August 16, 2026 as folks will be attending the PFLAG Greensburg picnic at Hempfield Park. Attached is the flyer for the potluck picnic. I also wanted to let you know that among the resource/information tables at the picnic will be the 3 Westmoreland County UU Fellowships--Smithton, East Suburban and our own Ligonier Fellowship. Sunday July 26 -
We welcome Dr. James Paharik back to our Fellowship with his message "Welcoming the Stranger." Jim is Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education at Seton Hill University. Much of his research has been studying populations that have been decimated by injustice and its effects. He will also be bringing a guest with him as he shares his message, “Welcoming the Stranger” about the current immigration crisis. Her name is Amber Blair, and she is director of the Christian Immigration Advocacy Center. They do really essential work in supporting immigrants who are so threatened right now. She will be describing the work her organization is doing. Dr. Paharik’s presentation will be brief, and the pair are eager to share with our fellowship an example of how local organizations are supporting immigrants in our region.There is a long Biblical tradition of teaching on the duty to welcome strangers. And yet the United States has often struggled to find compassion for immigrants to our nation. Today, as we reflect upon our 250th anniversary, it is appropriate that we examine the moral imperative to be generous toward new arrivals.

Sunday July 19
Dr. David VonSchlichten, longtime friend of the Fellowship, will speak on the topic of "Peace in Nature." Nothing brings healing for the soul like the natural world. Dr. Dave will explore how time in nature and with animals can give us peace and hope during frightening and stressful times.
