First United Methodist Church of Liberty, Texas We hope to see you! Sunday School: 9:30 AM
Worship: 10:45 AM on Facebook Live and in person The first preacher of the Liberty Methodist Church, John C. Middleton.

As the oldest church organization in Liberty County, the Liberty Methodist Church was only one of 17 appointments made at the first session of the Texas Conference held in the Republic of Texas which convened on Christmas Day, 1840 at Rutersville in Fayette County, Texas. Woolam, arrived in the Spring of 1841. It was not until 1846 that a church structure was built. The Town Trustees granted the M

ethodists a church site on the northeast corner of the "church square" where a one-room log church was erected. After a storm destroyed this building in 1853, the Town Trustees granted the "church square" to the Catholic Church which occupies the "church square" today. The Liberty Methodist Church acquired a new site on Main Street in 1854 and built a wood-frame church on the site of the present sanctuary. This building served the congregation for 50 years and was followed by buildings constructed in 1904, 1930, and 1953. The pulpit and bell used in the 1854 church are still in use today. The chapel was constructed in 1980 as a gift from Triphene S. Rev. Lindsey Smith is the 91st preacher to be appointed to the First United Methodist Church of Liberty since 1840.

A prayer from Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey.

Gracious and merciful God,
Our hearts are heavy as we witness the pain, fear, and unrest following the recent events in Minnesota. We grieve the loss of life, the trauma carried by families and communities, and the deep divisions that continue to wound our common life. We ask for your comforting presence to surround all who are suffering and for your healing to move powerfully among them.

As followers of Jesus Christ and as United Methodists, we affirm the sacred worth of every person. Our Social Principles call us to uphold human dignity, pursue justice, and work for peace in our communities and in the world. Shape us into people who resist violence, who seek understanding, and who choose compassion over anger. Teach us again what it means to love our neighbor, especially when that love requires courage, humility, and sacrifice.

Guide leaders toward wisdom and accountability. Stir your church to be a faithful witness for reconciliation and hope. Empower us to speak truth with grace, to listen deeply to one another, and to become instruments of your peace. May your Spirit lead us toward a future marked not by fear, but by justice, mercy, and steadfast love.

In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen.

We invite you to continue this work through prayer, learning, and faithful action. The resources below offer opportunities to grow in understanding and to engage thoughtfully with our immigrant neighbors during this time.
