He healed the man dragging Him to death.… and the soldiers didn’t even blink.
Every time I read this part of Scripture, it shakes me. It’s one of the most unsettling moments in the entire Bible.
You know the story. Things get chaotic in Gethsamane. Peter panics, pulls a sword, and swings it; there’s a servant’s ear lying on the ground. Just blood and screaming everywhere.
And then Jesus just... stops the chaos.
He reaches out, touches the wound, and the ear is back. Just like that. It’s His final miracle before the cross, and honestly, it’s kind of weird if you think about it. He didn't do it for a friend or a disciple. He did it for a guy who was literally there to help kill Him.
But look at the guys standing right there, the Roman guard.
Just minutes before, the mere sound of Jesus’ voice had literally blown them backward (John 18:6). Now, they’re standing inches away, watching Him create new skin out of thin air. They are face-to-face with the raw, terrifying power of the Creator.
And they felt... nothing…. absolutely nothing.
No one dropped their spear. Nobody fell to their knees. Nobody stopped to ask, "Hold on, who is this guy?"
They just watched the miracle, probably wiped some blood off their boots, and tightened the handcuffs anyway. Now that’s haunting.
We always tell ourselves, "God, if You’d just give me a sign, one clear miracle, I’d finally surrender."
But these men had the ultimate sign. They had physical, undeniable proof. And they still chose to arrest Him and lead Him to death.
Why? It turns out miracles don't actually change hearts. They just reveal where your heart already is.
You can be right next to Jesus, watching Him move, hearing the stories and still miss Him completely if you’re too focused on your own "to-do" list. Those soldiers were so busy "doing their jobs" that they ignored the fact that God was standing in front of them.
So, stop waiting for a sign to start following Him. Those soldiers had their sign, and they still walked away lost.
God isn’t trying to "WOW" you or impress your eyes. He’s trying to reach your heart.
Are you waiting for a miracle, or are you actually ready to surrender?
