Dear friends,
As you know I am on sabbatical and today I had a choice: attend a Polish Corpus Christi Procession or attend a Pride Parade. I prayed about it this morning and the thought came to me that the Pride Parade was a Corpus Christi Procession where the diversity of the incarnation is evident and where we reverence, care for, celebrate and uphold the dignity the Body of Christ, especially the portion of it that I minister to. I was not disappointed. I made the right choice. I hope you can see the face of Jesus in the faces, the eyes, and the smiles in these pics just as I do.

On this feast of the Most Sacred Body and Blood of Jesus, how do care for, advocate for, defend and love the Body and Blood of Jesus as we encounter Jesus in persons like Matthew? —-Matthew Shepard was 21 when a couple of guys took him out to a field, tied him to a fence, pistol whipped and tortured him, barraged him with homophobic slurs, and left him for dead. He hung there unconscious for 18 hours, when a passing cyclist found him, at first thinking it was a scarecrow. Shepard was beaten so brutally that his face was completely covered in blood, except where it had been partially cleansed by his tears. He succumbed to his injuries and died five days later in the hospital, never having regained consciousness. This was done to him because he was gay.

"The Eucharist demands that we be members of the one body of the Church. Those who approach the Body and Blood of Christ may not wound that same Body by creating scandalous distinctions and divisions among its members … When those who receive it turn a blind eye to the poor and suffering, or consent to various forms of division, contempt and inequality, the Eucharist is received unworthily." Amoris Laetitia #186, Pope Francis

Bishop Robert Barron: “The Church states the moral principles of just war doctrine and asks the questions, but the president applies and answers them, so there’s no conflict!”

Pope Leo clarifies today: “So, actually, there is no just war in Iran, and just war theory comes from centuries past, when we couldn’t imagine the weapons and the destruction.”

I am all for churches being a part of the nonviolent marches and protests that have happened in the wake of violent killings, but these protests happen only after a tragic event has taken place. I want the church to be what prevents these acts from ever happening. I want the church to be the community that is so dedicated to loving our neighbors, to caring for the poor and neglected, and to living out true reconciliation that these killings do not even take place.
- John M. Perkins
