Today the Church celebrates a saint who once walked the hills of Eastern Kentucky.

On June 19, 1982, Saint Teresa of Calcutta came to Jenkins to mark the opening of the Missionaries of Charity’s first rural mission in the United States. She returned six years later — in 1988, the same year the Diocese of Lexington was established.

Think about that: a woman now honored throughout the Church came to a small Appalachian coal town in what is now our diocese. She came because she believed Jesus was waiting there to be loved in the poor.

Today the Church celebrates a saint who once walked the hills of Eastern Kentucky.

On June 19, 1982, Saint Teresa of Calcutta came to Jenkins to mark the opening of the Missionaries of Charity’s first rural mission in the United States. She returned six years later — in 1988, the same year the Diocese of Lexington was established.

Think about that: a woman now honored throughout the Church came to a small Appalachian coal town in what is now our diocese. She came because she believed Jesus was waiting there to be loved in the poor.

The road to Jenkins began decades earlier. On September 10, 1946, while traveling by train to her annual retreat, Mother Teresa received what she called a “call within a call.” Through interior locutions and visions in the weeks and months that followed, she understood Christ’s cry from the Cross — “I thirst” — as His thirst for love and for souls.

Her yes was generous, but it was not impulsive. She allowed the call to be tested. She waited nearly two years for permission. Then she acted.

“‘I thirst’ has no meaning unless through total surrender I give all to Jesus.”

Jesus still thirsts for our love. Every vocation is one way of answering that thirst with a gift of self. Could He be calling you to priesthood? To religious life? To marriage?

Your vocation may not take you from Calcutta to Jenkins. But it will take you wherever Jesus is waiting to be loved. Ask Him. Listen. Discern with the Church. Then do not be afraid to give Him your yes.

Join us today for First Friday Adoration in the chapel after the noon Mass. Benediction is at 8 p.m.

You are invited to sign up in the book in the Gathering Space for at least 30 minutes. Sign-ups are important so that we know that someone will be in the presence of our Lord at all times.

Even if you don’t sign up, please consider spending some quality time with Jesus during our time of Adoration

We mourn the passing of parishioner Mark Fritz who died August 30. He and his wife Donna have been active members of Pax Christi Catholic Church since 1998.

His funeral will be at St. Patrick Church in Maysville at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, with Rev. Michael Comer as Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, September 6, 2026, from 3-6 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick Church, Maysville, St. Rose of Lima Church, Mayslick and Pax Christi Catholic Church in Lexington.

Please keep the family in your prayers during this time of loss.
