“Pay attention!” parents and teachers admonish kids. Yet adults also need to be encouraged to pay attention to the world around us. It has been said that “attention is love”: the things and people we give our attention to are the things we really care about.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “A person will worship something, have no doubt about that. We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will come out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping, we are becoming.”

How do we square that with how much time we spend looking at phones, screens, traffic, and work emails? This month, Rev. Claire will reflect on the power of mindfulness, meditation, and prioritizing our values in real and active ways.

Every moment of our lives we are reacting — reacting to the people around us, the situation at hand, and the environment through which we move. Often these reactions are mindless, almost pre-programmed in us, and they are not always to our benefit nor the benefit of others.

If we want to make a change in the world — or even just make the daily routine of our lives less of a rigmarole — what might aid us in becoming aware of our reactions and the power that lies therein?

Rev. Claire invites everyone to join us tomorrow as we celebrate our annual Flower Communion, the celebration of diversity and inclusion that Unitarian Universalists have practiced for over 100 years. This beautiful ritual, in which we all bring a flower and take a different flower home, was created by married Czech Unitarian ministers Maja and Norbert Capek, who created this ritual as a religious protest to the rise of fascism in Europe in the early 1900s.

If you have ever wanted to join an anti-fascist movement — but are more into colorful flowers rather than wearing all black — this is the service for you!

Please remember to bring a flower so you can take a flower home! 🌺 (But don’t worry if you forget; we will have extra flowers so that everyone can bring home a flower after the service.)

Between the end of the church year and the beginning of summer, we’ll reflect on sacred spaces of transition, uncertainty, and possibility. From dusk to dawn, childhood to adulthood, grief to healing, we live much of our lives in the in-between.

Join us this month as we explore what it means to dwell in liminal spaces, to find meaning in the pause, and to trust the unfolding journey. Together, we’ll honor the thresholds that shape who we are becoming.
