We are a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Some distinctive usually associated with Disciples include:

* Open Communion. The Lord’s Supper, or Communion, is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all believers.
* Diversity of opinion. Each person is free to determine individual belief guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer.
* Baptism by immersion. In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God is made possible. Although Disciples generally practice baptism by immersion, they honor other baptism traditions as well.
* Importance of church unity. All Christians should cooperate in ministry whenever possible, affirming each other as sister and brothers in Christ.
* The ministry of all believers. Both ministers and laypersons lead worship, direct service opportunities and nurture spiritual growth.
* Freedom of belief. Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Old Union Christian Church to Host Final Sale: Book Bag Bonanza Saturday, September 12—Fill a Bag for $5

Old Union Christian Church’s Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) will host its final book sale of the year, a Book Bag Bananza, selling used books and puzzles, on Saturday, September 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place at the church, 6827 Russell Cave Rd, Lexington, in the indoor fellowship hall, located in the basement.

Community members are invited to enjoy a day of browsing and filling a bag for $5 while books last. There is a wide selection of fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and puzzles available. Puzzles are $2 each.

All proceeds support Old Union Christian Church and the CWF in caring for the historic church home and sustaining community ministries. Youth bookmark sales will help fund upcoming activities and service projects.

Old Union, whose members come from Scott, Bourbon and Fayette Counties, welcomes neighbors, families, and friends to join in this community tradition and help spread the word. For more information, contact Jayna Oakley, 859-494-1027.

Remembering Our Old Union Traditions — and Looking Ahead!

While sorting through memories, we came across a treasure from 1984 — a newspaper article celebrating the beloved Old Union Christian Church Annual Auction. Even then, the auction was described as a tradition rooted in fellowship, generosity, and the joy of gathering as a church family.

From homemade cakes that sparked bidding wars to quilts stitched with love, the auction has always been more than an event — it’s a reflection of who we are as a community. Year after year, families, friends, and neighbors have come together to support the church, share laughter, and keep alive a tradition that began long before many of us were even born.

And now… it’s our turn again. The 81st Old Union Christian Church's Annual Auction is coming up on October 3!

Let’s make this year’s auction one to remember. Let’s bring the fun, the fellowship, and the spirit that has carried this tradition through generations. Whether you donate an item, bake something special, volunteer, or simply show up ready to enjoy the day — you are part of what makes Old Union shine.

Spread the word, invite your people, and let’s fill the pavilion with joy, generosity, and community.
