SECONDARY IMPORTANCE

I have noticed that the main issue that men grapple with over the doctrine of election is not whether or not the Scripture teaches it. Any honesty at all will make a man admit the Scriptures do teach this doctrine. What men grapple with is whether or not it is essential to believe this doctrine and preach this doctrine. Most preachers will admit the Bible does teach election, but they relegate it to a doctrine of secondary importance. (Judgment day will reveal the motive behind such actions.)
But will the Scriptures support such a position? In Exodus 33:18, Moses said to God, “Show my Thy glory….”To which God replied, “…. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious.” Paul quotes this in Romans 9 to answer the carnal mind’s objection to election (Romans 9:14-15). According to Scripture, God’s glory and election go together. If the glory of God can be thought to be a doctrine of secondary importance, so can the doctrine of election. But we know the glory of God is of primary importance. What does that make God’s electing mercy in Christ? - Henry Mahan

THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HATH TAKEN AWAY
“It is GOOD for me that I have been AFFLICTED, that I MIGHT LEARN Thy ways” (Psalm 119:71).
God’s ways and God’s Word are best learned by experience and in time of trouble. When our Lord is pleased to lay His hand heavily upon us, we do not soon forget the lessons learned. When the Lord singles out a believer or a church for special affliction and adversity, it is not for punishment, nor lack of love for them; it is for eternal blessings and because He does love them. “Whom the Lord loveth” He chasten, corrects, and teaches! When Job sat before his friends, who was afflicted? THE ONE GOD LOVED! When Paul stood before King Agrippa, who wore the chains? THE ONE GOD LOVED! Humanly speaking, which path of life would you prefer to live on earth, that of Esau or Jacob! Esau had the life of prosperity and ease; Jacob was full of trouble and conflict, BUT GOD LOVED JACOB! Thank God He has loved us in Christ and is pleased to teach us His ways by dealing with us in such a way that we are weaned from the world and find our life, comfort , and hope only in Him. A person who measures his blessings and relationship with God by his prosperity, health, happiness, and worldly comforts makes a fatal mistake. “If ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards and not son” (Hebrews 12:8). Paul said, “Most gladly therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (II Corinthians 12:9-10). He who sends the trial for His glory and my good will supply the grace sufficient. Those who know the Redeemer, also know that when we are weak, we are strong; when we are poor, we are rich; when we are empty, we are full; when we die, we live!

“JACOB HAVE I LOVED,
BUT ESAU HAVE I HATED”
Romans 9:13
You will sometime hear those who deny the wrath of God and preach the universal love of God for all men declare that what this verse in Romans 9:13 really says is, “God loves Jacob and He loves Esau LESS.” Now, I ask you, how does our infinite, Almighty, perfect God do anything LESS than perfectly? Is He at times LESS RIGHTEOUS? LESS HOLY? LESS JUST? Our comfort in Christ is that He who loves His sheep HAS always loved them, WILL always love them and loves then AS He loves Christ Jesus, His only begotten Son (John 17:23). And to those who were told to depart from His presence, He said, “I NEVER knew you.” Malachi 3:6 declares “I am THE LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” Our comfort is that HIS LOVE IN CHRIST is without degrees or changes, as is His wrath upon those outside of the Ark – Christ Jesus!

SOVEREIGN GRACE
Man’s entire apostasy and death in sin, so that he cannot save himself, and God’s entire supremacy, so that He saves whom He will, are doctrines exceedingly distasteful to human pride. But they are Scriptural. Why was one thief saved and the other lost? “Even so Father for so it seemed good in Thy sight” (Matt. 11:25-27). God was not bound to save the one and He had power enough to have saved the other, and neither could save himself. What made the difference? The Sovereign grace of God! - Horatius Bonar

I was saved by grace when Christ stood as my Surety before time began and took complete responsibility for my salvation. I was saved by grace when Christ kept the law as my Substitute and died for my sins as my Substitute. I was saved by grace when I first experienced salvation by looking to Christ. Presently, I am kept saved, by grace. When I die and enter heaven, it will be by grace only. Just as Christ is All in the salvation of a sinner, grace is all in the salvation of the sinner! And what is the evidence of grace in a sinner’s life? He relies on grace only as the evidence of salvation. Truer words have never been spoken, “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). -Todd Nibert

A NEW CREATURE
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” -II Corinthians 5:17

The Lord Jesus Christ does not show blind men how to see. He gives them new eyes and they see Him! The Lord Jesus Christ does not tell deaf men how to hear. He gives them new ears and they hear Him! The Lord Jesus Christ does not beg lame men to walk. He gives them new legs and they leap as an hart, and follow Him! All who are in Christ receive a new mind of repentance toward Him, a new will that bows to Him, a new heart that believes and loves Him. Yes, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature!

“Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.” - Psalm 116:7

The day-to-day life of believers is much like that of unbelievers. Believers are not immune from the pressures of this life so it is very easy to lose sight of our place of rest as we are rushing about with our lives.
How blessed it is to gather like this each Sunday and be reminded of Him Who is our rest. We do not gather to fight battles, but to rejoice in Him Who already WON the battle. We do not gather in order to perform some act of righteousness hoping to improve our eternal blessedness, but to praise Him Who IS our righteousness. We do not gather to make atonement, but to be reminded of Him who ALREADY made atonement for us by the offering up of Himself, once for all.
Let us return to our rest, calling to mind how bountifully the Lord has dealt with us. Do you lack any good thing today? God has dealt bountifully with us in all things needful for this life and the life to come – praise His name. In Christ and through the knowledge of Him we have everything we need. Moreover, God’s bounty to us is revealed in what He withholds from us: For there is therefore, now, NO CONDEMNATION … that is exactly how much condemnation I want – none! And that is exactly how much God has given me. So, return unto thy rest, O my soul!

DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY
The sovereignty of God may be defined as the exercise of His supremacy. Being infinitely elevated above the highest creature, He is the Most High, Lord of heaven and earth. Subject to none, influenced by none, absolutely independent. God does as He pleases, only as He pleases, always as He pleases. None can thwart Him, none can hinder Him. So His own Word expressly declares: “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46:10); “He doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand” (Daniel 4:35). Divine sovereignty means that God is God in fact, as well as in Name, that He is on the Throne of the universe, directing all things, working all things “After the counsel of His own will” (Ephesians 1:11). - A. W. Pink

When the Lord said to the paralytic in Matthew 9:2, “Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee”… literally, “Be of good cheer, thy sins have been forgiven thee.” This forgiveness is a completed action on God’s part. There is nothing that the sinner does in order to be forgiven! Works religion makes forgiveness the end of a process. There are things the sinner needs to do to obtain the forgiveness of sins. That makes the forgiveness of sins to be predicated on what the sinner does! Thank God in the forgiveness of sin, there is nothing the sinner must first do to be forgiven. He finds out through the Gospel message he has been forgiven. Works religion ends with the forgiveness of sins. The Gospel has at its starting point the full and complete forgiveness of all sins!
