The American Red Cross has an urgent need for donors and is counting on people to act now and book a time to give lifesaving blood. Donors of all blood types are essential to keeping the blood supply strong enough to withstand the challenges of summer.

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day brings an increase in severe injuries from car accidents, ATV crashes, sports-related injuries, and other summer activities. According to AAA, fatal crashes involving teen drivers increase by 30% during this time. A single person seriously injured in a car accident can require up to 100 units of blood.

Together, we can make a lifesaving difference.

In many congregations this Holy Trinity Sunday, our contemporary voices will rise to sing the beloved 18th century hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty." Here is a wonderful poem inspired by this hymn written by Anya Silver and shared publicly in 2016. Enjoy!

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
How to love the Trinity, its vagueness,
non-sense, God talking to God on the cross?
Theological geometry, stumper of metaphor,
God humbled to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Only when I heard that voice singing Our songs
shall rise to thee did I feel a welling of love
that, at best, visits me occasionally in prayer,
indwelling and expanding within me.
Yes, God, the darkness hideth thee.
Too often as I sit in the pews, nothing
happens. Or worse, Nothing happens,
doubt a scrim over every word I pray,
a tepid mutter of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
But that hymn’s falsetto, surrender, the not-
knowingness of it—Lord, though I can not see,
I did hear a shimmer, some wick in me caught
fire, and fear, that liar, left me, momentarily,
free in the Holy, music, the blessed Trinity.

Our pumpkin patch is starting to take shape in the raised garden beds, and we can’t wait to watch these little pumpkins grow throughout the summer. Be sure to take a peek next time you’re walking through the park!

This Sunday is the final Sunday to bring individual fruit cups and juice drinks for Pilgrim’s Leah Circle collection. The donation box is nearly full, and your generosity has already made a wonderful impact for families and children in our community.

If you would still like to contribute, there’s time to shop and add your items on Sunday. Thank you for supporting our food pantry ministry!

Honoring those who died

Today is Monday, May 25, Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States that honors U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It takes place on the last Monday of May.

Every Memorial Day, we recognize a National Moment of Remembrance. At 3 p.m., local time, wherever we are, we pause for one minute to remember those who died in military service to the United States.

In case you didn’t know, we have 63 veterans buried in our cemetery. The following are the names and ranks of the men buried there, who died during wartime.

Lippard Corley (Cenotaph) was born in 1900 and died Oct. 6, 1918, off the coast of Scotland in World War 1 (1914–1918).

Private Henry Erby Lever was born April 14, 1895, and died Sept. 23, 1918, in France during World War I.

Sergeant Homer Franklin Derrick was born Sept. 26, 1923, and died Aug. 27, 1944, in France during World War II (1939–1945).

According to his daughter, Dorothy Tunstall, Captain Louie Ludwig Fiebrich apparently had heart issues while stationed overseas and died after returning to the United States. He was born on March 30, 1895, in Vienna (Wien), Austria, and died Sept. 25, 1945, in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA, during World War II.

Master Sergeant Richard Lee Smith was born on June 27, 1930, and died on July 5, 1970, during the Vietnam War (1955–1975).
