Garden Ridge Youth Ministry

Garden Ridge Youth Ministry Do justice, Love mercy, Walk humbly with your God :: Micah 6:8 We provide a wide variety of services to students 6th-12th grade and their families.

GRYM is the youth ministry of Garden Ridge church of Christ (GRCC) in Lewisville, TX (about 20 miles NW of Dallas). While we enjoy spending time together, going to ball games, Six Flags, and concerts, messing around and playing Capture the Flag!, or whatever, our main purpose is to encounter Christ together.

What an amazing start to the Oklahoma Mission Trip! The energy is high, despite hard work at the (wonderful) Luther Community Service Center. This group knows how to work enthusiastically, have fun, and worship powerfully.

God has been good in so many ways, including the extra special surprise of seeing Charlie and Sharon Steele at worship last night and dinner tonight! (And not just because they treated us all to Crumbl Cookies!)

I wish everyone could see what we're seeing; this really is the GRYM teens at their best and God going above and beyond!

More great stuff tomorrow!

Our South Texas Mission Trip ended with more special moments. A three-hour soccer match with local kids. Chris miraculously healing a sick vehicle for the umpteenth time on a youth trip. Mikah taking his Ring of Fire punishment like a boss. A fast and furious shift at the Regional Food Bank of Rio Grande Valley. A special evening of worship and bonding with the amazing brothers and sisters at Church of Christ North (Pharr). And a memorable beach day and night in South Padre. I can't say enough good about the endearing people we met, the memories we made together, the attitude and selflessness and positivity of our exceptional team, and most of all, of our Great God, who exceeds all expectations!

Our South Texas Mission Trip ended with more special moments. A three-hour-long soccer match with local kids, Chris miraculously healing a sick vehicle for the umpteenth time on a youth trip, a fast and furious project at the Regional Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, a very meaningful evening of worship and bonding with the local church family at Church of Christ North (Pharr), and then an incredible beach day and night in South Padre. I can't say enough good about the churches and people we met, the memories we made, the exceptional members of our team, and most of all, of our Great God!

Yesterday and today, we have had the opportunity to transform two homes. One crew laid new floors inside and painted outside for a family, and the other crew scraped, primed, and painted a home. A day and a half of hard work in oppressive heat...but this team laughed and sang practically every second of their projects!

Stop and think about that. Nineteen teenagers, who could be curled up on their couches in the AC scrolling through their phones are instead picking up tools, scrapers, rollers, and brushes, sweating for hours and ruining entire outfits, for no benefit to themselves, and JOYFUL ABOUT IT!

We have also gotten to serve at the Food Bank, and a group of us have spent the afternoons playing games, reading with, and loving on kids from the local congregations. This has given them the opportunity to make a deeper investment in these precious kids.

It's a beautiful thing to see the love of Jesus in action! Love that motivates sacrifice and service and genuine interest: it's what defined Jesus, and it's what has defined these teens this week!

We had an AMAZING first full day!
The congregation at Las Milpas was so loving and friendly. It was a joy to worship with them! David and Lucy Valdes joined us, and that was a special treat, too!

Then the Las Milpas congregation surprised us by serving us lunch. The food was beyond incredible! (That's what happens when there are seven actual sisters in the same congregation who are all very competitive to be the best cook.)

The Splash Bash gave our team the chance to do one of the things they do best: give kids the time of their lives. It is so special to watch our teens and adult leaders "build bridges" to the kids and their parents with the universal language of fun, high fives, hugs, and laughter!
We got to spend time with the ministers of the Las Milpas and North (Pharr) congregations, and they are amazing! They and their families have instantly made us feel like family, and it will be very hard to leave these warm, generous, hospitable, God-obsessed people!

We ended the day watching the heartbreaking Mexico World Cup loss and enjoying some powerful worship and debriefing.

The energy is high; the team is focused on why we're doing every single thing we're doing; and they are making the most of their work time and hangout time. I feel so blessed to be part of things like this, and hopefully you get a sense through these videos of the great things God is doing!

Today will be a full day of repair and paint projects. More on that later.
