June 8 Proverbs 8

Wisdom is available and calls out for us to come and live wisely. Wisdom is not something that hides from us. It is not something that only comes through age or education. It is not limited to only a few people who become "wise men". The verses remind us that wisdom is available to each and every one of us. God's Word is full of wisdom and too often it is found sitting on people's shelves collecting dust rather than open and giving insight and direction.

We know that wisdom comes from God because wisdom existed long before we did. Wisdom existed from the foundation of world. In fact, it was God's wisdom that brought about the world. The thing about wisdom is that it is not from mankind, but it is for mankind. Solomon's wisdom was not about Him making up great ideas. It was more about his ability to discern and understand from God's perspective as God helped him see things. Beware of any wisdom that doesn't originate from God. Whether it is from the Bible or from a godly person who seeks the LORD- the roots of wisdom must be God.

June 7 Proverbs 7

Wisdom is seen in living a proactive life instead merely a reactionary one. The best way to get out of trouble is to avoid it in the first place. If at all possible, we need to prepare ourselves for what weaknesses we may have and work to keep ourselves from temptations just as hard as we do as fighting against temptations when we face them. We can't prevent all temptations from coming our way, but there are many times by our choices of companions, our carelessness in our entertainment choices, or the places we find ourselves we open up the door for trouble. We have to fight hard not to walk through the door of temptation. The smartest things we can do is avoid the porch of temptation and not even walk down the sidewalk towards that door as much as we possibly can.

We also need to understand that this area of temptation described in chapter 7 has been the downfall of many of our Biblical heroes. David, Solomon, Samson, and other examples have found themselves as mighty men who showed an absolute weakness when it came to women. This reality has also shown itself as the downfall of many Christian leaders even up unto modern times. We would be wise to head the words of verse 25- "Don't let your heart turn aside to her ways". Don't lose your focus on God to be distracted by things in this world. Solomon, I think is not merely writing from his great wisdom, but also from his personal experience in this chapter. Not in the sense of committing adultery, but rather in making compromises to please women who ultimately started to pull his heart away from God.

June 6 Proverbs 6

Verses 16-19 are verses to take a close look. When you see a list of things that the LORD hates we would be wise to take note and stay far from these things. There are couple of things that we really need to consider in looking at this list.

First, this is not a list of specific actions, but rather categories. For example dishonesty can be lying on a witness stand at a courthouse or it can be telling a "little white lie" to your parents. Both are issues of dishonesty, but one in the world's view seems more acceptable than the other. We must be aware of calling out the sin in others, but ignoring it in ourselves just because we didn't do exactly the same thing.

The second thing we need to keep in mind is that there is a thing that God expects of us instead of just avoiding wrong. God doesn't hate lying just because he decided he doesn't like it. God hates lying because he values honesty and truth. He doesn't just hate when people deliberately stir up trouble among others. He hates it because we are called to love our neighbor as ourselves. For everything that God stands against there is a positive counter that He stands for. The faithful Christian life is not merely about avoiding wrong things, but faithfully doing the right things for God's glory.

June 5 Proverbs 5

We are reminded in this chapter to choose wisely what we do because there will be consequences. The temporary delights of sin are not worth the long-term ramifications of guilt and shame that come along. The reality is that "secret lives" never work. Someone can do a great job of covering their sins and even look like a great person to those around them. But there are two realities that we must keep in mind.

The first reality is that a life that is deceptive and built on lies will eventually start to crack and the truth will start to show itself to people. The more important reality is: "For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths." (v.21). This is a sobering reminder that even if we can hide our sins from the whole world and fool everyone around us; we are not hiding or fooling God. It is craziness to hide our sins for the sake of our reputation among men, but completely ignore the one whose opinion truly matters- God. Instead of working hard to hide our sins we should put that energy into overcoming our sins to God's glory. The good news is that there can be victory over sin and forgiveness from the LORD, but it requires repentance not cover-ups and excuses.

June 4 Proverbs 4

Solomon is a wise man giving advice to his children. He is helping them understand the paths that they should go. He is teaching them the framework of wisdom that will allow their lives to move forward into God-honoring pursuits in life and avoid evil and temptation. The advice he give is good and worth listening.

However, we must also be aware that despite Solomon's wisdom and good words there were areas where he fell woefully short in living according to wisdom. Solomon gives excellent wisdom in verse 7 where he says, "Guard your heart". He says this and understands it to be true. It is great advice.

However, Solomon did not practice this in all areas of his life. He let his guard down when it came to marrying many wives, especially those who worshipped idols. In fact, this was a violation of the command in Deut. 17:17- "He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold." This was not wise and caused issues in Solomon's reign and personal life.

It is great for us to give words of advice to others, but we must be careful that we also live according to that wisdom in our own lives. We can give people words of wisdom, but we need to be sure that we also "practice what we preach". What a disaster it is when someone shares wisdom to others falls flat into foolishness by not living what they said. It is hard to understand because they clearly knew better.

June 3 Proverbs 3

Verses 5-6 are likely some of the most quoted and well-known verses in all of Proverbs. Trust in the LORD with all your heart. This has some key principles that come with it. First, trust and belief are connected but not the same thing. Many people believe that God exists. Not nearly as many actually trust in God. Use an example of a chair. I can say that I believe that the chair will hold me up if I were to sit on it. But I show I trust the chair when I actually sit down and let it do what I believe that it can do. In a similar way we say we believe that God can do this or that. But we demonstrate trust when we actually place it into His hands and let Him work.

We also need to be aware that there are many cultural ideas that go with the idea of "following your heart". If you heart is not trusting and dependent on Jesus, then your heart can actually lead you astray. I have known people who have "followed their heart" and abandoned their wives and children for something or someone that makes them happier (only leading to despair and heartache for themselves down the road). God would not tell someone to do this. Instead, that is what leaning on your own understanding looks like. We can't let our hearts and emotions lead our lives, rather we must allow Jesus to lead our hearts and make our paths straight.

We must think about God in all aspects of our lives. In all our ways we must acknowledge Him. This is a reminder that we cannot separate our "spiritual lives" from the rest of our lives. All aspects of our lives, not just Sunday mornings need to come under submission to Jesus, and we must think about how I honor God at work, at home, in recreation, in my family, in my friendships.

June 2 Proverbs 2

Wisdom is available but it must be sought. I think as we are considering the need for wisdom, we must seek it and regard it as precious. v.3-5 use some words that show a search for wisdom, not just a passive hoping to become wise. There is an assumption that wisdom comes with age (and there is some truth to that). But wisdom is also available to us no matter what our age and experience. Wisdom can be sought today not just gained tomorrow. In the NIV it says, "call out for insight", "cry aloud for understanding", "search for it as hidden treasure". Gaining wisdom is not passively aging and maturing, but rather actively living and pursuing wisdom in relationship with God.

How can we gain wisdom? Prayer- seek God and cry out to the LORD for insight and wisdom. Scripture- God's Word is full of wisdom and insight. Wise Christian examples- I believe that we can learn from the wisdom of others and their experience. Think of the strong Christians who are living righteous lives and ask them for insight and words of wisdom.

God is not stingy when it comes to giving out wisdom. When we realize that we need it we can seek it without fear of God neglecting our requests. Be encouraged by the words of James 1:5- "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." God will give us wisdom, but we must not let wisdom be mere ideas or platitudes; it must be seen in our actions.

June 1- Proverbs 1

The Proverbs were written by Solomon who was known as the wisest man alive. As you read the Proverbs you will see they don't read like a narrative story. In many cases we get quick pieces of wisdom followed by different pieces of wisdom in the next verse. In Proverbs 1 we see something that is necessary for us to get right. If we don't get v. 7 right, then the Proverbs in reality will not make sense. Life itself will not make sense if we don't get this right. Verse 7 is like a pair of prescription glasses that we need to look through to bring clarity to the rest of life.

The thing that we must get right before we can hope to get the rest of the wisdom into our hearts and minds is that we must properly fear the LORD. We must see God for who He is at the foundation level of wisdom and understanding. If we don't see God correctly then we cannot see ourselves correctly. If we don't have a proper view of the Creator, we will never really be able to appreciate and understand the purposes of His creation. I would also say this: If we don't know the one who knit us together in our mother's wombs then we will never truly fulfill the purpose of what we were created for.
The fear of the LORD- the proper respect and reverence for God is the beginning of knowledge. Ignoring God or wrong thoughts about God will make our understanding of life very unclear and often brings messiness into our lives. So today as we begin Proverbs ask God to help you see Him correctly. Ask God to help you live in the reverence and awe and proper fear of the LORD. Without this we can read about Godly wisdom in Proverbs but we will continue to live according to the wisdom of this world.
