The Divine Right to Rest

In a world of seemingly unending war, fear, division, corruption, and exhaustion, where can we turn for rest? This sermon invites us to reimagine the familiar words of Psalm 23— placed in conversation with Native American poetry— as a radical vision for personal and collective rest. Today’s preacher is Katie Kuntz-Wineland. Katie is a former Student Minister of NUUC, where she served in 2015-2016. She earned her MDiv at Methodist Theological School in Ohio, where she is currently pursuing a second master’s in Christian Ethics. In addition to her work at Bittersweet, Katie began a new role this summer as a Regional Justice Coordinator with the statewide office of the United Methodist Church. Katie is pursuing ordination in the United Methodist Church, which is finally possible for her and other LGBTQ+ people. She and her wife, Beth, live in Toledo, Ohio.

With Banned Book Week upon us, today we celebrate the freedom of speech, and how it is an essential element of our religious journey. This Sunday, we also celebrate a Book Communion. For this Sunday’s Book Communion, you are invited to bring a book that has nourished you—spiritually, intellectually, or simply by bringing joy (it doesn’t need to be a banned book). Before worship, we will gather these books on a shared table as a symbol of the wisdom and imagination that sustain us as a community. Everyone will be invited to choose a different book to take home after worship, receiving in turn something that has fed another member of our congregation. Extra points if you can write a brief message in the front of the book about why it matters to you. Please don’t bring more than a few books tops, and please bring books for any age of person.

A Ticket to Our Destination: A Celebration of Ingathering

This Sunday is our Ingathering service and water communion. Summer is a season of spreading out. Tree canopies expand, and birds fly from the nest. You may have found yourself out and about as well, whether sitting in your yard, visiting a local park, or traveling further afield. Now, as fall approaches, we return. We return to one another, to our shared commitments, and to the rhythms of congregational life. Like drops of water that fall from the sky, fill streams, become rivers, and flow into the sea, we, too, return to one another and to the eternal that holds us all. You may bring water from a place that is special to you. This could be a nearby stream, the hose you use to water your garden, or any other source. We will invite you to pour your water into a shared vessel, mingling these waters. Later you will be invited to receive a few drops of these mingled waters that you might take home to water a plant or to remind you of our shared lives. We will use the remainder of our water to dedicate the Memorial Garden.

Blessing of the Animals

Bring your beloved creatures (or a photo or other token of them) to church this Sunday for a blessing and for a brief worship (geared to animal attention spans) on the theme of how animals reflect the holy. Talking about…Unitarian Universalsim

Unitarian Universalism feel hard to describe—yet it’s also wonderfully simple. This Sunday we’ll explore both sides of that truth. Many of us hesitate when someone asks, “So… what is your church about?” but this Sunday Rev. Susan will explore how to speak about our faith with confidence, warmth, and clarity.

Immediately after our slightly abbreviated worship, we will have a brief congregational meeting for the purpose of approving the budget for Fiscal Year 2027.

Scarcity Is Cap: A Story of Shared Abundance

Drawing on the ancient story of a crowd gathered on a hillside—ordinary Palestinians, hungry and uncertain—we remember the moment when a teacher invited them into courage and mutual care. The “miracle” was not food appearing out of thin air, but fear loosening its grip. People who had tucked away their small portions began to share, and what looked like scarcity became abundance. This is a story about how Paisha Thomas M.Div., is an artist, activist, and educator based in Central Ohio.

Paisha Thomas is today’s guest preacher. She is the founder of Land of the Freed, a non-profit dedicated to Black land back, reparative justice, and Black liberation. Combining an undergraduate background in Human Resources Management with an M.Div., Paisha specializes in learning, development and public speaking. Guided by liberation theology and decolonization, she utilizes creativity, design thinking, and strategic alignment to build educational paths toward freedom from oppression. communities transform when we trust one another enough to offer what we have.
