Since 1985, Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries has partnered with churches, private foundations and individuals to help fulfill their commitment to the commands of Jesus to “visit the prisoners” and help the “least of these” (Matthew 25:34-40).

YOUR LABOR IN THE LORD IS NEVER WASTED.

This Labor Day, we honor the men and women whose hard work serves their families, communities, churches, and neighbors.

But we’re also reminded of another kind of labor—the work God has called each of us to do for His Kingdom.

“Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” — 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV)

At Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries, we see the fruit of that labor when the Gospel reaches behind prison walls—through volunteers who serve, prayer partners who faithfully pray, supporters who give, and friends who help carry this ministry forward.

Every prayer matters.
Every act of service matters.
Every gift matters.
Every person matters.

And whether your mission field is a workplace, a church, a neighborhood, your own home, or behind prison walls, God can use the work of your hands and the love in your heart to make an eternal difference.

This Labor Day, we thank God for YOU and for everyone who faithfully serves where He has planted them.

On this National Day of Charity, we’re reminded that generosity is more than giving—it’s an opportunity to carry the love and hope of Jesus to someone who may feel forgotten.

At Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries, we have the privilege of sharing the Gospel with men and women impacted by incarceration through prison outreach, Bible-based teaching, written resources, correspondence, and media ministry. Again and again, we hear how a message, a book, a letter, a prayer, or a visit reminds someone behind the walls that they have not been forgotten.

Scripture reminds us:

“I was in prison and you came to visit me.” — Matthew 25:36

This weekend, Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries will be taking the hope of Jesus behind prison walls across West Texas.

From Plainview to Snyder, Amarillo to Childress, and right here in Lubbock, our teams and volunteers have opportunities to share God’s Word, encourage men who are incarcerated, and remind them that they are not forgotten and their story is not over.

GOD LOOKS PAST THE BEARD!

Happy National Beard Day!

Today we celebrate the mighty beard—the short ones, the long ones, the carefully trimmed ones, and the ones that may have gotten just a little out of control.

And yes, beards definitely have a place in the Bible! Aaron’s beard even gets a mention in Psalm 133.

But here’s something worth remembering:

“People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7

That’s the real lesson for National Beard Day.

At Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries, we believe no person should be defined simply by what we see on the outside—or by their past, their mistakes, or even their current circumstances.

Jesus sees the heart. And Jesus transforms lives from the inside out.

Stephen Canup’s own story is a reminder of that truth. He surrendered his life to Jesus while incarcerated and went on to share the hope he found in Christ with others.

So whether your beard is biblical, barely there, or completely nonexistent… remember:

Beards grow on faces.
God works on hearts.
And real freedom is found in Jesus.

His faithfulness reaches beyond the prison walls.

“For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” — Psalm 100:5

Prison walls do not limit the goodness of God.

Every time a volunteer walks into a prison, a Bible teaching reaches someone who is searching, or a letter reminds someone they have not been forgotten, we have another opportunity to point people to the enduring love and faithfulness of Jesus.

We’ve heard from incarcerated men and women who say these teachings, letters, books, and visits have brought them hope, strengthened their faith, and reminded them that someone cares.

That is why Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries keeps going.

God is good. His love still endures. His faithfulness still reaches people—even behind bars.

WHEN EVERYTHING AROUND US FEELS UNCERTAIN… JESUS HASN’T MOVED AN INCH.

“While we must certainly treat those who do not agree with us with respect, kindness and gentleness, we must be very careful not to compromise on Who we know is Truth – the Son of God, Jesus Christ.”

There are seasons when almost everything that once felt secure suddenly doesn’t.

Plans change. Relationships change. Circumstances take unexpected turns. Sometimes life looks nothing like the picture once imagined.

And yet, right in the middle of all that uncertainty, Jesus remains.

Not an idea about Jesus.
Not religion.
Not something manufactured to make a difficult season feel better.

Jesus.

The same Jesus who meets people in ordinary homes, hospital rooms, workplaces, and quiet moments of uncertainty is meeting men and women behind prison walls today.

That is part of the beautiful work happening through Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries. In places where so much can feel uncertain—family, freedom, tomorrow—the truth of Jesus can become wonderfully clear.

There is something deeply comforting about that.

Circumstances change. People change. The world changes.

Jesus doesn’t.

And sometimes the deepest peace is found in discovering that when everything else seems to be moving, the One we are standing on is still exactly where He has always been.

He Lost Both Arms—But God Wasn’t Finished With His Story

“I tried to pull myself to the side of the road not knowing that my arms were not attached to me.”

In 2007, Leroy Duran’s life changed in an instant.

His vehicle struck a guardrail at highway speed. Leroy testified that he was ejected from the vehicle and both of his arms were torn off at the shoulders. He lost seven pints of blood, flatlined at the scene, and would later flatline four more times during surgeries.

His arms were reattached. He spent months in a coma and woke unable to move from the neck down.

Yet this devastating chapter would not have the final word.

As Leroy cried out to God, hope began to emerge. Movement returned, and doors to prison ministry soon began opening. Leroy has continued using his testimony to tell others what Jesus has done.

SUNDAY REFUEL: YOUR SOUL NEEDS REST, TOO

You’ve spent enough time carrying what God never asked you to carry.

Maybe this week has been a battle. Sickness has drained your strength. Depression has weighed heavily on your heart. Anxiety has filled your mind with “what ifs.” Or maybe you’ve exhausted yourself trying to please everyone around you.

Today, give yourself permission to be still before the Lord.

Sunday is a beautiful opportunity to refuel your soul—to worship, pray, open God’s Word, and remember how much you still have to be grateful for.

You may not have everything you prayed for, but God is still faithful.
You may not feel as strong as you once did, but God is still your strength.
You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you can rest knowing Who holds tomorrow.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28 NKJV

At Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries, we are continually reminded that true freedom isn’t determined by circumstances. Freedom begins in Jesus. The same Savior who brings hope behind prison walls can bring peace into the battles we face every day.

So today, stop striving for a moment.

Breathe.
Give thanks.
Worship.
Rest in His presence.

Then step into the new week knowing you do not walk into it alone.

Don’t Give the Enemy Room

An idle heart can become a battleground—but a life surrendered to Jesus has purpose. Stay in the Word. Stay in prayer. Stay faithful to what God has called you to do.

Spurgeon’s words remind us that idleness can leave room for temptation, but a life surrendered to Jesus is a life filled with purpose. God calls us to stay spiritually alert, grounded in His Word, and active in the work He has given us. At Freedom in Jesus Prison Ministries, we see the power of that purpose as men and women discover that their past does not have to define their future—Jesus offers a new way forward.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion…” — 1 Peter 5:8

HEALTHY BOUNDARIES AREN’T SELFISH — THEY’RE WISE.

“Boundaries define us. They define what is me and what is not me.”
— Dr. Henry Cloud

Sometimes loving others well means understanding what God has—and has not—asked us to carry.

Healthy boundaries help us recognize where our responsibility ends and another person’s begins. They allow us to love without enabling, serve without losing ourselves, forgive without ignoring wisdom, and care deeply without trying to control what only God can change.

Even Jesus demonstrated boundaries. He loved people completely, yet He also withdrew to pray, said no to demands, and remained focused on what His Father had called Him to do.

“Each one should carry their own load.” — Galatians 6:5

Maybe someone needs this reminder today:

You can love someone without carrying everything for them.
You can forgive someone and still establish healthy boundaries.
You can say “no” to something so you can say “yes” to what God has called you to do.

Ask the Lord for the wisdom to know the difference.
