The apostles are being prudent and charitable when they say “dismiss the crowds so they can go buy food.” But it was also wrong.

Jesus responds with words that crash through nearly every excuse we’ve ever made: "you give them something to eat." A ludicrous idea. You can’t blame them for pointing out the scarcity to Jesus, as we’re all tempted to do when Jesus asks something of us: “I can’t do that, I don’t have enough, I’m not enough.”

But that’s the logic of the man who buries his talent. The solution to being faced with the insufficiency of our resources or abilities, Jesus says it clearly: “Bring them here to me."

That’s always the solution. Because this is not just a story about a miraculous picnic. The Christian tradition has always viewed this as one of the clearest prefigurations of the Mass. Matthew shows that even in his verbs: He Took. He Blessed. He Broke. He Gave. The same verbs used at the Last Supper, the same verbs used every Mass.

It’s a fitting image of the Mass because it proves Christ’s mastery over creation; it costs nothing for Him to alter the quantity of substances to save a few thousand from hunger. So that we might not hesitate to believe when He claims to change the nature of substances, to save all mankind from sin and death.

The apostles were actually right; the loaves weren’t enough. But Jesus wouldn’t multiply loaves never offered. He doesn’t transform bread and wine not offered. He doesn’t transform a soul not offered. He doesn’t provide fruit to efforts not offered.

All four evangelists record this miracle, yet none of them seem to have actually seen it happen. They all explain it like the apostles just keep handing out baskets, and the baskets just keep being full. That’s what faith normally looks like: a Christian just doing his job. God taking that and providing in extraordinary ways is actually an ordinary part of life. At least it is when Christians are willing to be bold and generous, in spite of all insufficiencies.

What are your five loaves? Is it your time? Is it your money? Is it a marriage that seems too broken to fix? Do you look at it and think, this is not enough?

Well it’s not. But it was never supposed to be. The widow's mite wasn't enough either. The point is you offer it anyway. Christ provides the multiplication.

So make your offering. Offer yourself. Bring what little you have to Him. And learn what it was like for the apostles, holding a basket that should have run empty, but hasn’t.

Our neighbors at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church are holding a prayer vigil TONIGHT for Katelyn LeBlanc, the beloved Leonville Elementary teacher and mother of four who passed away Sunday.

All are welcome. We encourage our parishioners to join in prayer for Katelyn’s soul, for her husband and four daughters, for everyone at Leonville Elementary and in our community grieving this loss.

Our Leonville community is grieving the loss of Katelyn LeBlanc, a beloved teacher at Leonville Elementary and mother of four daughters, who passed away Sunday following a car accident.
She was our neighbor, and her students, her daughters, and her family are our neighbors too. We ask all our parishioners to join us in prayer for the repose of her soul, for comfort for her daughters, and for peace for the entire Leonville Elementary family in this heartbreaking loss.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.

🖤 It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved teacher, Mrs. Katelyn LeBlanc.

Mrs. LeBlanc was a cherished member of the Leonville Elementary family whose kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her students made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She loved her students wholeheartedly and poured herself into helping them learn, grow, and feel valued each day.

As we mourn this heartbreaking loss, we ask that you keep her husband, her four daughters (all students at Leonville Elementary)and all of her family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. We also ask that you lift up our students, faculty, and staff as we navigate this difficult time together.

The Leonville Elementary family grieves alongside the LeBlanc family. Though Mrs. LeBlanc is no longer with us, her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to children will forever remain a part of our school.

“Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day.”
