"At Baptism, we promise to seek and serve Christ in all persons, to love our neighbor as ourselves, to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being. These promises are not suspended when public life becomes contentious. Indeed, it may be precisely in such moments that they matter most.

The Church must therefore resist three temptations. We must resist the temptation to withdraw from witnessing the suffering of others. We must resist the temptation to disengage from the difficult questions of our common life, as though the Gospel had nothing to say beyond the walls of our churches. And we must resist the temptation to allow the Church to become an instrument of partisan politics."
