We're using the first four Sundays of the year to take a close look at Cornerstone's vision, its foundation in God's word, and how we are trusting God to fulfil it. Last Sunday Johnny Vanderhorst looked at the crucial role gospel community plays in that.

We aim to join God in His mission of creating a new community of lives transformed by the gospel.

On the last Sunday before we especially celebrate Jesus’ birth, we remember why He came: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus IS love: the agent, the effector, and the sacrifice.

Advent, week three: Jesus is our Joy.
What is joy in the first place, though--and then what does it mean that Jesus *is* our joy? As David Cato shared this past Sunday, Christian joy is an emotional response rooted in the finished work of Jesus; it is the settled assurance that God is in control and that ultimately everything will be all right, and, from that assurance, the determined choice to praise God in every circumstance. This past Sunday we marked the second week of Advent with a look at how Jesus is our peace. At Christmastime especially, it's easy to think of this peace in terms of calm and quiet, or perhaps view "peace on earth, goodwill toward men" as the herald of cultural or political peace. But as Blaine Freidline shared from Isaiah 9:6-7 and Luke 2:1-7, the peace that Jesus came to bring was far more radical and earth-shattering than anyone's idea of peace; He came to bring -- to be -- peace between God and wayward humankind. Now that is truly something worth celebrating!

Again and again throughout his letter to the believers at Colossae, Paul emphasizes the importance of thanksgiving -- and here he does again, in the context of prayer. Then he goes on to say "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt ..." what exactly does that mean, and what implications does it have for us today? When you have “put on” your new self, that self with “Christ in you,” what do you look like? In light of the riches we have in Christ as described in Colossians chapters 1–2, how shall we live? Here at the beginning of chapter 3, we see how Paul lays that out: to begin, set your mind on the things of Christ in the heavenly realm and let Him direct in the use of things on earth.
