Honoring Trudy Coomer’s Forty-Year Ministry

Trudy Coomer’s near-forty-year legacy at Jr. High Choir Camp at Camp Loucon began in 1973. Through her musical ministry, she molded thousands of young lives by combining the joy of song with the message of the Gospel.

A Legacy of Leadership & Evolution
* 1973 Launch: The program started as a children’s music camp strictly for 4th-5th graders.
* Trudy later expanded the vision, rebranding it as Choir Camp for 6th-8th graders.
* Longtime friend Jimmy Wallace co-deaned for several years, heavily shaping camp history.
* Family Tradition: Trudy eventually passed the conductor’s baton to her daughter-in-law, Daphne Coomer, and son, Eric, who stepped in as co-deans to preserve this rich heritage.

A Deeply Rooted Community
Trudy created a unique culture where former campers regularly returned as volunteer counselors. They recognized that choir camp gave youth a safe, rare space to flourish in ways they couldn’t anywhere else.
Her profound impact was honored during her 30th anniversary in 2003. Counselors gifted her a Loucon adirondack chair, and a dedicated “Music Tree” was planted near Munday Lodge.

In Remembrance: A Tribute by Adam Potter
“Trudy Coomer literally spent every summer for decades as dean of the Jr. High Choir Camp edifying, teaching, and molding the lives of young people. Her unmistakeable small, petite frame and high-pitched voice were simply a guise for the pure force of Christian love, strength, and determination that endured within. Her nearly-forty-year dedication to the musical arts, specifically within the ministry of Loucon, not only speaks to her longevity, but places her along side names like Munday, Scheldorf, Matthews, and Short. To say Trudy will be missed is an understatement. Yet to know her passion and presence lives on through thousands of camper experiences is a testament to her faith and her legacy at Camp Loucon and the majesty of God.”

Behind every unforgettable camp experience is a community of people making it possible.

Because of you, our staff and volunteers are trained, supported, and equipped to lead with care, compassion, and purpose. Your generosity doesn’t just impact campers for a week—it multiplies through every conversation, every friendship, and every life touched at camp.

And the impact doesn’t stop when campers head home. The connections built at Loucon become lasting friendships, growing confidence, and a community they can count on for years to come.

Thank you for helping us build something that lasts.

Because of your generosity, hard work, and willingness to serve, this place continues to grow, improve, and welcome people home. ❤️

This year alone, volunteers and donors helped us:
• pave roads across camp
• rebuild the canteen porch
• remodel the Turner bathrooms
• clean up Loucon Lake
• repair bridges
• build new benches
• install new flooring
+ add new indoor siding to Reynolds
+ outdoor siding to Orchard bathhouse
• clear dangerous dead trees
• restore Vesper Hill seating
…and so much more.

Every project tells a story of people who care deeply about this ministry and the campers, retreat guests, and families who will experience it for years to come.

None of this happens without the people willing to give their time, skills, resources, and hearts. Thank you to our incredible workday groups, volunteers, and partners — including the NOMADS, Baptist Disaster Relief, Adam Potter, Adair County GSA, the Turner family, Dan Wilson, the Loucon Committee, settle memorial UMC, Henderson UMC, Munfordville UMC, Glasgow UMC and Churubusco UMC — for helping us care for this place so it can continue caring for others.

And we’re not done yet. More improvements, restoration projects, and exciting updates are still ahead.

Thank you taking caring for this place.
