Come As You Are

We know that our sin separates us from God. This doesn’t mean that He doesn’t want to have a relationship with you. God wants you to be His follower and has taken the first step by sending His son to die for your sins. God’s grace is not something earned but something He has already given and is waiting for you to receive.

In the past, church may have been presented to you as something for only “good people”. Or that God wants you to become a better person before you begin a relationship with Him. This could not be farther from the truth. God does not want people to come to him proud and self-righteous, but rather humble and broken.

Christ’s blood is sufficient to cover any sin. Paul is a perfect example of this. He was formerly named Saul and was a great enemy to the church. He would drag Christians from their homes and throw them in prison (Acts 8:3), he approved of the stoning of Steven (Acts 8:1), and he “breathed threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord” (Acts 9:1). Even with this list of deeds, God had a purpose for him. After being temporarily blinded by God, he was baptized and began preaching the gospel. Today we know him as a prominent writer of the New Testament. In 1 Timothy, Paul refers to himself as the chief sinner (KJV). Meaning that if Christ is sufficient for Paul he is sufficient for anyone.

We are saved by grace not our deeds. This means that you can come to God at any time, no matter what is in your past. God is waiting for you - “He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.” Zephaniah 3:17

Our Gospel Meeting this past week was a wonderful time of worship, fellowship, and learning. We are so thankful to Jay and Laurie Loyd for making the long trip to spend this time with us! Jay brought us a great series of lessons that analyzed what it means to be a disciple. This is a topic that applies to every believer, please take a look at this brief outline below of his messages this past week.

-What is a Disciple?

The word disciple means to become a pupil and to enroll as a scholar. This involves submission, loyalty, and committing to a certain way of life. As His followers, we represent Him to the world and strive to imitate Him in everything we do.

Luke 6:40 “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.”

-The Cost of Being a Disciple

Jesus offers us the most valuable gift we can receive, eternal life. This gift is freely offered to everyone, but it does require us to make sacrifices. Matt 16:24 “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’”

Taking up your cross is a daily decision to put Christ above everything in your life. Remember that this is exactly what He did for you; He was the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

-Why Be a Disciple?

We cannot escape God’s judgement and we are all guilty of sin. Through His life Christ achieved the righteousness that we cannot (Heb 4:15), by His death He took the penalty of our sins (Rom 5:8), and by the resurrection we can see that our debt was paid (Rom 4:25).

The cost of discipleship is incomparable to the cost that Christ paid to save us. He is not asking us to do anything that He has not already perfectly done for us.

-The Mission of Making Disciples

Jesus told the apostles in Matt 28 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” If we don’t intentionally make choices that further this mission we become distracted from our main goal.

As a disciple your works matter because good deeds bear fruit that will glorify God and lead people to Him. Matt 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

-A Culture of Discipleship

A congregation should provide an atmosphere that promotes love, growth, scriptural faithfulness, and obedience. Love is our foundation as Christians and our decisions should be based on the inspired Word. Growth is proof of a healthy relationship to Christ and obedience is evidence of our loyalty.

A congregation is a community where we support each other and hold each other accountable, being “one body in Christ” (Rom 12:5).

Are you taking up your cross daily? Are you a disciple that bears fruit? How can you help your congregation in their mission to make more disciples?

The world is ever changing and there are constant new innovations that have the potential to influence us. For example, scientists began developing the internet in the 1960s, by the mid-2000s most American homes had an internet access, and today most people carry a smart phone everywhere they go. The positive and negative impacts of the internet can be debated, but it is undeniably influencing us. Even newer than the internet, how will artificial intelligence (AI) influence us? The Bible doesn’t provide instructions on how we should react to every innovation. That would be impossible. However, it does teach us to use discernment.

Paul outlines a Christian’s purpose in Ephesians 6:8 and 10, “for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light…trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord”. We won’t know God’s will for us in every situation, but we can try to learn. Your ability to discern does not develop on its own but must be cultivated by use. Hebrews 5:14, “But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.”

Often when faced with a problem we become passive, taking it as it comes. But we need to intentionally ask ourselves, “what is God’s will for me here?”. The internet/AI influences everyone who uses it, and if you deny that you are already being influenced. There is reason to fear AI because it has no moral judgement and threatens a person’s ability to reason for themselves. That doesn’t mean never use the internet or completely reject AI. It means you should have an awareness of the threat and be prepared to have a Godly reaction to new innovations. Use discernment of God’s will to actively navigate through issues in your life.
