e First Baptist Church of Leesville was organized in 1883. The Reverend Joab Edwards served as its first pastor. A “Certificate of Gift” filed in the Lexington County Courthouse shows that the present church site was donated by Captain A.P. In 1890, the church had 28 members and the pastor’s salary was $50 per year. The first addition to the church was made around 1906. The church grew slowly. In 1945, just as a remodeling program was being completed, the church building was destroyed by fire. The present auditorium was built in 1946 at a cost of $12,000. In 1955 an education building was built directly behind the sanctuary. The parsonage was added in 1959 behind the church facing College Street. In 1964 a second education building containing a pastor’s study was built. In 1973 the present sanctuary was remodeled, enlarged and a steeple was added. In 1982 the church purchased the Ashbury Methodist Church’s building on Schumpert Street. The building now serves as our activities building. Today, the building that once served as a parsonage is now used as office space and conference areas.
