Today begins the season of Lent. This is a time of repentance and reflection, considering what amazing love this is that Jesus would die for us.

So, as other pastors are doing, I have something theological to say —

Well, actually I don’t. I have a quote that Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, who understands costly discipleship far more than I, though our theologies are both shaped by war:

[For us] “To endure the cross is not a tragedy; it is the suffering which is the fruit of an exclusive allegiance to Jesus Christ…but it is the suffering and rejection, and not rejection for any cause or conviction of our own, but rejection for the sake of Christ.”

I’m not one who believes that Lent is about offering something to Christ, but rather sacrificing ourselves in the service and love of Christ.

What’s the difference? Sacrifice costs us something, something precious.

You know, that whole cast our crowns thing…

Giving up chocolate is an offering.

What are we being called to sacrifice?
