GLADNESS IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

"I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD" (Psalm 122:1).

We often invite people to come to church with us, and receive many reasons why they cannot come. There are many people who attend church simply out of obligation or a sense of duty. To them, it's just the right thing to do, so they do it. If we would only realize and help others to realize how much of a joy it should be, not a chore, to attend the house of the Lord!

When we come to the house of God, and put ourselves under the sound of God's Word, we learn about what God expects of us. We learn what needs to be done and what should be avoided. We learn how God wants us to think, act and react. We come together to study the Word of God so that we might show ourselves approved unto God (see II Timothy 2:15).

When we come to the house of the Lord, we find peace. After walking and working in the world and dealing with those who are of the world, we can come into God's house and be reassured through His Word that we are safely kept by His grace, which will give us great peace through the Holy Spirit (see Psalm 119:165).

When we come to the house of God, we also find strength. This is one of the most important reasons I find for the midweek service. As we battle the world, the flesh, and the devil through the week, it is wonderful to be encouraged by God's people as we come together for worship. As we share with other the trials we face and the blessings God has provided, we lift one another up and strengthen each other to stick by the stuff and to stay in the fight (see Hebrews 10:24-25).

These blessings and many more besides we will receive IF we will attend the house of the Lord faithfully, and our joy will be increased. The psalmist said it well, "Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah" (Psalm 84:4).

So, are we joyfully attending the house of the Lord, or merely doing our duty? I hope you can truly say with David, "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD" (Psalm 122:1).

JESUS ONLY!

When Jesus was transfigured on the Holy Mountain, "...there talked with two men, which were Moses and Elijah" (Luke 9:30). Moses represents the Law and Elijah represents the prophets. What did they talk about? Scripture gives us the answer: they communed about the Cross (v. 31).
When Peter suggested paying homage to Moses, Elijah, and Jesus (v. 33), it seems God wasn't too interested with the proposal. He spoke from heaven, telling the disciples to listen to Jesus (vv. 34-35). Then Moses and Elijah disappeared, and Jesus was left alone with His disciples (v. 36).
When a person hears from the Father and understands who Jesus really is, Moses and Elijah disappear. We see Jesus only. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Author and the Finisher of our faith. He is the only One to whom we bow the knee.
Too many who profess to have heard the Father's voice spend too much time at the feet of Moses, bowing their knee to the Law. They are legalists who have little or no zeal for the lost. Their only concern is, "Touch not; taste not; handle not;" (Colossians 2:21).
Many also spend too much time bowing down to Elijah. Prophecy is their joy. But prophecy shouldn't have us spend all our time gazing into the future -- it should have us gazing at the Savior and His desire to see the lost come to Him!
The great Baptist preacher of London, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, said, "Here is another who spent all his time in interpreting the prophecies, so that everything he reads of in the newspapers he could see in Daniel or Revelation. Some say he is wise, but I would rather spend my time in winning souls. I would sooner bring one sinner to Jesus than unravel all the mysteries of the divine Word, for salvation is the one thing we are to live for."
The death and resurrection of our Savior didn't occur so that we could dabble in the future, but to open the door of salvation to hell-bound sinners. Studying prophecy, though it is important, should really cause us to see the lateness of the hour and increase our burden to see the lost come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Those who hear the Father's voice hear the Son. They walk in His steps. They come down from the mountain to continue His work on earth -- to seek and to save that which was lost. Let's be sure we follow Jesus ...only!
