Our custodial staff has been out to the church assessing the grounds. It appears that when the plowing was done during the week, most of us was pushed and shoved into huge piles all over the sidewalks and near the church entrance.
A huge thank you to Ms. Anita and Mr. Chester for salting and shoveling where the could.
We are ONLY virtual tomorrow at 11am for the safety of our senior saints and all worshippers.

Our custodial staff has been out to the Church assessing the grounds. It looks like much of what was plowed was pushed up against the front of our church on the sidewalks and all.just chunks and chunks of ice and snow. We are virtual only tomorrow. A huge thank you to them for shoveling what they could and salting where they could.

Join us for the 1st Sunday of advent 2024 and the last 1st Sunday of the year. Lets usher in the hope, peace, joy and love of God from until the new year.
Providence Baptist Church has an illustrious history dating back to 1874.During that year, Providence Baptist Church held its inauguralRevival Service at The Bailey’s School Society of Leesburg, which under a later name change, becameknown as“The Bailey’s Institute”. This location was alsoone of the first schools orinstitutions of learning,in the area, that was founded by a literate African-AmericanLoudoun County resident named Richard “Jim” Bailey. That Revival was organized and conducted by Rev. Harvey Johnson, a powerful preacher of his day, who saw the need for religious and othertraining among his race. He is also creditedfor organizing many churches in Northern Virginia and as far south as Richmond. Rev. Johnson became the first Pastor of Providence Baptist Church and was installed by a white Minister since there were few Negro churches in the area at that time.
In 1875, a lot 40 feet by 106 feet was purchased on Church Street by Mr. I. Cooke and Fannie B. Nickens, his wife. The cost of materials for building the initial structurewas $250, whichwasfurnished by a lumber salesman and contractor named John Morris. While serving as pastor of Providence Baptist Church, Rev. Harvey Johnson was also made a Trustee and with the property paid for, the deed was drawn up on June 7th1875, and given to Rev. Johnson, who in turn presented it to the congregation and its trustees.
Beginning with its first pastor, Rev. Johnson, there have been manyoutstanding pastors at Providence Baptist Church.Following Rev. Johnson, Rev. Simon Peter Fisher became pastor where he served faithfully and was recognized as a good organizer and strong leaderuntil his death. The call for new leadership was then answered byRev. D.A. Henderson. He was followed by Rev. E.D. Tyler, a very pious servant of God, during whose administration, many souls were added to the church. God called him from labor to reward. Next to grace our pulpit was Rev. Francis E. Pree, a graduate of Howard University, a great preacher, and an outstanding leader. Under his leadership, many members wereadded to the church, as well and an annex to the main sanctuaryand new windows were added to further beautify the house of God. After the close of this administration, the Rev. Mcquery, a graduate of Union University in Tennessee, and a most dynamic preacher was called. His stay was brief; he was called to Ebenezer Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Rev. H.M. Chapman, another graduate of Union University was called. During his tenure, he demonstrated his giftas a most powerful preacher who also added many souls to the church and as a visionary, who desired to erect a new and more beautiful building. He resigned upon accepting a call to the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. Following Rev. Chapman was the calling of Rev. Huston Brooks, a very ambitious and energetic preacher. Under his administration, the first Homecoming Service on the Second Sunday in August was inaugurated. After his resignation in September 1954, the Rev. J.E. Morris was called in March 1956. Rev. J.E. Morris was an alumnus of Howard University and a most effective minister. Under Rev. Morris’ administration, three ministers were licensed: Rev. Charles Randall, Rev. U.S.G Prince, Sr., and Rev. N. Howard Stanton. The initial idea of renovating our church was advanced by Sister Ellen Webb and Anna Stinger, members of the Progressive Christian Club of Providence, and in 1975, the renovation began under Rev. J.E. Morris’ administration. Rev. J.E. Morris served as pastor until Rev. Herbert C. Love Jr., our current pastor.
Rev. Herbert C. Love Jr., now Rev. Dr. Herbert C. Love Jr., along with his lovely wife, Marie B. Love, joined Providence on July 15th1980. He was installed as pastor of the Providence Baptist Church on November 2, 1980. Rev. Love brought many new ideas for spiritual and financial growth during his first year as pastor of the church. Many ideas were executed into aplan for restructuring churchclubs and organizations. Sunday School and Prayer Services were added to the weekly worship experience at the church.Rev. Love saw a need for supporting our young people and has worked tirelessly to implement many youth-oriented church programs.A scholarship fund was established encouraging our youth tofurther their education after high school. The financial growth began with a reorganization of the Finance Committee, strengthening of the Trustee’s Board, and goals set for programs givingby clubs and organizations. With gifts of love from the congregation, more renovations of the church began with repairs inside and out, stained glass windows, the renovation of the Fellowship Hall, the addition of a handicapped ramp, and the completion of the parsonage, which has become a financial asset to Providence. In May of 1983, the town council established a uniform real property numbering system changing the address from 39 Church Street to 205 Church Street S.E.
Since being the pastor of the Providence Baptist Church, there have been many members added to the church rolland there have been many great pastors who have trainedunder the leadership of Rev. Love. Some of those names include Rev. Simms, Rev. Heldenburg, Sons of Providence Rev. Harold Stinger, and Rev. Louis V. Roberts, Rev. Reginald Williams who later became the pastor of Bethel Baptist Church Unionville VA, and his former wife, Minister Ruth Williams.
In 2002, an anonymous donor gave $300,000 to assist the church’s ongoing building fund effort. This new renovation which was started in 2003 expanded the church sanctuary, refurbished the interior with new pews, new carpets, a new fellowship hall, a new meeting area, classrooms, and new restrooms. The renovations were completed in 2005. More members joined and more preachers became involved in church spiritual and community outreach programs. Rev. Marva Robinson became the Assistant Pastor in 2007. She was very instrumental in the development of several ministries, which started at Providence to include, the women’s ministry, the singles, and the couple’s ministry. Other ministries were followed by her efforts. In 2008, the church embarked on the renovations of the parsonage. Upon the completion of those renovations, the parsonage was used for various functions including Sunday School and as ayouth center. Later it was utilized as a rental property, which has become a financialbenefit to the church. The Lord continues to bless the church with other ministers and pastors: Rev. Sydney Buck, Minister Mary Thomas, Minister Isaac Smith, Minister Terry Harris, Minister Joseph King, Rev. Jamilla Gault, Rev. Corey Gault, and Rev. David Dennis, Chaplin Calvin Scott, Rev. Beulah Spellman, and Minister Jonathan Jackson.
The congregation has been instrumental to the success of various fundraising efforts to meet the needs of the church which included the purchase of the new pews, the installation of the new stain glass windows, the purchase of a baby grand piano, the 1-2-3 Launch Program which was designed to provide long-term churchfinancial stability, the purchase of a new church van, and the audio visual upgrades; just to name a few. In addition to praising the Lord in our morning services, the church has had numerous services with varying themes over the years; there have been a multitude of guest ministers, congregations, singing aggregations, plays, and the church has also been blessed by the presence of local and state politicians. Providence has recognized the dedication and contribution of the Pastor and First Lady through the years with services and banquets honoring the sacrifices and love that Rev. and First Lady Love personify.
In December 2017 Rev. Dr. Herbert C. Love Jr. retired as Pastor of the Providence Baptist Church serving Providence for 37 years. Rev. Love has passed the baton to Rev. Corey Z. Gault and Rev. Corey Gault became installed as Pastor of Providence on April 15th2018.
For all of the years of the church’s existence, it has been a beacon of hopeduring dark and challenging periods of ourcountry’s history. God continues to bless Providence Baptist Church. We pray that our lives will be committed in such away, that we may leave a good record, and hear “Well done” from our Heavenly Father.
