Providence Baptist Church has an illustrious history dating back to 1874.During that year, Providence Baptist Church held its inauguralRevival Service at The Bailey’s School Society of Leesburg, which under a later name change, becameknown as“The Bailey’s Institute”. This location was alsoone of the first schools orinstitutions of learning,in the area, that was founded by a literate African-AmericanLoudoun County resident named Richard “Jim” Bailey. That Revival was organized and conducted by Rev. Harvey Johnson, a powerful preacher of his day, who saw the need for religious and othertraining among his race. He is also creditedfor organizing many churches in Northern Virginia and as far south as Richmond. Rev. Johnson became the first Pastor of Providence Baptist Church and was installed by a white Minister since there were few Negro churches in the area at that time.
In 1875, a lot 40 feet by 106 feet was purchased on Church Street by Mr. I. Cooke and Fannie B. Nickens, his wife. The cost of materials for building the initial structurewas $250, whichwasfurnished by a lumber salesman and contractor named John Morris. While serving as pastor of Providence Baptist Church, Rev. Harvey Johnson was also made a Trustee and with the property paid for, the deed was drawn up on June 7th1875, and given to Rev. Johnson, who in turn presented it to the congregation and its trustees.
Beginning with its first pastor, Rev. Johnson, there have been manyoutstanding pastors at Providence Baptist Church.Following Rev. Johnson, Rev. Simon Peter Fisher became pastor where he served faithfully and was recognized as a good organizer and strong leaderuntil his death. The call for new leadership was then answered byRev. D.A. Henderson. He was followed by Rev. E.D. Tyler, a very pious servant of God, during whose administration, many souls were added to the church. God called him from labor to reward. Next to grace our pulpit was Rev. Francis E. Pree, a graduate of Howard University, a great preacher, and an outstanding leader. Under his leadership, many members wereadded to the church, as well and an annex to the main sanctuaryand new windows were added to further beautify the house of God. After the close of this administration, the Rev. Mcquery, a graduate of Union University in Tennessee, and a most dynamic preacher was called. His stay was brief; he was called to Ebenezer Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Rev. H.M. Chapman, another graduate of Union University was called. During his tenure, he demonstrated his giftas a most powerful preacher who also added many souls to the church and as a visionary, who desired to erect a new and more beautiful building. He resigned upon accepting a call to the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. Following Rev. Chapman was the calling of Rev. Huston Brooks, a very ambitious and energetic preacher. Under his administration, the first Homecoming Service on the Second Sunday in August was inaugurated. After his resignation in September 1954, the Rev. J.E. Morris was called in March 1956. Rev. J.E. Morris was an alumnus of Howard University and a most effective minister. Under Rev. Morris’ administration, three ministers were licensed: Rev. Charles Randall, Rev. U.S.G Prince, Sr., and Rev. N. Howard Stanton. The initial idea of renovating our church was advanced by Sister Ellen Webb and Anna Stinger, members of the Progressive Christian Club of Providence, and in 1975, the renovation began under Rev. J.E. Morris’ administration. Rev. J.E. Morris served as pastor until Rev. Herbert C. Love Jr., our current pastor.
