Church of the Holy Spirit

Church of the Holy Spirit Church of the Holy Spirit is a fellowship that loves Jesus. Come experience God's love and power. We welcome you, your family, and absolutely everyone!

We enjoy worshiping the Lord together on Sundays at 10:00AM. We also have a Healing Service on the first Saturday of every month beginning at 5 PM. We believe strongly in the ministry of small groups for mutual care, fellowship, prayer and discipleship in God's Word. As we love one another, we grow into the character of the Lord Jesus. We'll help you to discover your spiritual gifts and passion, a

nd serve using them. As we love God and our neighbors, and make disciples who make disciples, God's Kingdom is breaking in! We are a "Three Streams, One River" church: Evangelical, Charismatic, and Sacramental.

Here's a teaser picture for one of our ministries, "Fill the Backpacks!" We love helping out local kids through this campaign to provide them with school supplies, and in the past we've been involved with Backpack Buddies as well. Around Christmas time we participate in Operation Christmas Child, providing presents to under-privileged children. What are your favorite ministries for supporting God's littlest warriors? Let us know in the comments!

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
- 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Many of us will enjoy watching the Olympic contests this summer. It is inspiring to see the hard work, dedication, and skill of the athletes as we cheer them on in their respective disciplines. Paul, when he wrote his letter to the church in Corinth, drew a comparison between these contests and the Christian's faith journey. Olympic medals, or the ancient version, a laurel wreath, eventually get dirty and decay, but the reward of heaven and of living in the presence of God forever is so much bigger, better, and brighter than any earthly prize. And so, Paul reminds us, we must be disciplined and focused: not taking our eyes from the goal, which is Christ.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith - that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

- Ephesians 3:14-21

This is our prayer at Church of the Holy Spirit for each one of you. That you would be full of the love of God, and that you would receive the benefits of the One who does every good work in us. We pray that God would be glorified in you and would fill you with His Spirit, so that you may rest in the awe-inspiring presence of the Mighty One.

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
- A Collect for Guidance, Book of Common Prayer 2019, Anglican Church in North America

We're in the middle of most people's work week. Many of us are tired from the grind, worried about projects that are due, or distracted by what we're hoping to do on the weekend. Brother Lawrence was a monk who realized the importance of "practicing the presence of God" even in these day-to-day activities. By making a habit of spending just a few seconds consciously thinking about God during every task, we can slowly move towards the goal of making every moment of our lives a moment of worship and to "remember that we are ever walking in [his] sight," even while filing papers, changing diapers, typing a memo, or any other of our daily tasks. By looking to God during all of our "cares and occupations," we eventually learn how not to forget him, and to walk in consciousness of his presence every day of our lives. It is often not easy, but it is always worth it.

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
- Matthew 6:9b-13

This is the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray. Today, in churches all around this world, believers will be saying these words together as they humbly ask their Heavenly Father to provide for all their needs. Wherever you are right now, I encourage you to read these Bible verses allowed and make them your prayer, just as Jesus instructed.

"Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change."
- James 1:17

It may not be quite the same as one of the gifts God is referring to in this verse, but we also have a gift for you! Have you stopped by the church to pick up a Church of the Holy Spirit coffee mug? We give them for free to first-time in-person visitors. (Sorry online folks, we don't ship them, so you'll have to come to Leesburg to get it!) Drop by tomorrow at 10am for our Sunday service and to get your very own CHS mug!

"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
- James 1:2-4

God challenges us to not only accept the struggles we encounter in this life, but to even rejoice in them, since we know that it will strengthen us in our faith. You would be hard pressed to find a Christian here at CHS that does not have trials and pain in their past, but when you look into their faces you can see the joy of the Lord that has become their strength.

If you want some of that supernatural joy and strength, come join us on Sunday at 10:00am and hear the good news of Jesus Christ.

The Vestry is the board behind the scenes that makes essential decisions about the future, budget, management, and direction of Church of the Holy Spirit. The vestry is based on the Biblical concept of deacons in the early church, as those elected by the people to administer the affairs of the congregation.

The vestry has to approve any big changes before they happen, such as when we gave a call to William Stuart-Lee to come be our new rector. The vestry formed a search committee, which then informed the vestry of their recommendation (William), who was then approved unanimously by a vote within the vestry.

Individuals on the vestry are elected by members of Church of the Holy Spirit. Each person serves a 3-year term, but they are staggered so that there can be elections each year as some members rotate off and others rotate on.

If you are interested in ministering in this way or simply in casting your vote for the individuals who sit on this board, you must be a member of CHS. You can fill out the connect card on our website to enquire about upcoming membership classes.

"Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be led aside by diverse and strange teachings.... Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of not advantage to you."
- Hebrews 13:7-9a, 17

We are so grateful for the godly leadership and example we have received from our pastors and the diocesan bishop at Church of the Holy Spirit. They are keeping the faith and guarding us from false teachers who would give us "strange teachings" that contradict the Good News we have received. Let us do everything we can, then, to support them and appreciate them in this role, praying for them, serving with them, and following the example of their lives, so that Christ's Church may be strengthened.

"Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you are also in the body."
- Hebrews 13:1-3

Here at Church of the Holy Spirit, we consider hospitality to be a very important part of our ministry. Sometimes we have a big meal together to celebrate special occasions, like this luncheon to celebrate the institution of William Stuart-Lee back in June. Ever Sunday we have a great spread of snacks and coffee available after the service while we fellowship with one another. Come be part of our church family and feel the brotherly love!

"Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."
- Hebrews 10:19-25

We will be gathered together to draw near in worship to God today at 10:00am. See you there!

Pastor William loves his kids, Peter and Eleanor!

Just as an earthly father gently leads his children and guides them as they grow into the men and women they were created to be, God cares for us, his adopted children, and gives us his Holy Spirit to help us become who He made us to be.

Pastor William is currently preaching a sermon series on "The Father Heart of God," and we are greatly looking forward to tomorrow's installment! See you there!

"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"

During William's Institution as our new Rector (Head Pastor), the vestry and pastoral staff presented him with gifts that emphasized his calling as a pastor.

Pastor Clancy presented a Cross as a reminder of Christ's death and present glory.
Pastor Dean presented a Bible, exhorting William to preach the Word of God.
Deacon John presented a Book of Common Prayer as a reminder to pray without ceasing.
Youth Leader Sara presented a Catechism, encouraging William to teach the faith.
Senior Warden Jeff presented bread and wine as a reminder to lead the congregation in worship.
Junior Warden Patricia presented the keys of the Church, that the doors would be open to all and that many would be saved.

It was such a beautiful moment watching this torch of Church leadership be passed.

William Stuart-Lee is now the Rector (Head Pastor) of Church of the Holy Spirit!

Thank you, Clancy Nixon, for obeying the voice of God when he called you into ministry and for leading Church of the Holy Spirit faithfully for so many years. May you have a blessed retirement!

Thank you, Bishop Chris, for your commitment to overseeing the churches in your diocese with Biblically faithful leadership and a heart of grace and love for the pastors you pastor. We thank God for your guidance and example!

Thank you, William Stuart-Lee, Rebecca, Peter, and Eleanor, for picking up your lives in England and answering God's call to come and minister to us in the United States. We look forward to many years of serving together!

Praise to you God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for your continued blessings on us. In this season may our full hearts overflow with love for you as we grow ever deeper in relationship with you! Amen.

What is your attitude towards receiving Communion?

"We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies.
We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table; but you are the same Lord whose character is always to have mercy.
Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen."

The hot weather last week was summer coming in and making a big entrance! Our youth really set the vibe for the season with their graduation party decor: I personally love the pineapple with Sunglasses!

The changing of the seasons is yet another reminder of God's great love and his promises towards us. In Genesis 8:22, the Lord says, "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease." This is one of his promises to Noah when they exit the ark after the flood. And so, as winter became spring and spring became summer and summer will go on to fall and to winter, remember that God is holding all things in his hands and will never fail us.

Prayer really does work, even today!

Pictured is a friend named Jose. Jose has been suffering from colon cancer for a year, and it was continuing to get worse. He even had to cancel his plans to accompany his family on their vacation to Spain. But after a group from CHS visited him and prayed with him for his healing, his color returned, energy improved, and some of the cancer had shrunk by his next doctor's appointment!

Jose accepted Christ and is shown here enjoying the vacation he had thought he would be unable to participate in.

Praise the Lord!

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
