Proverbs 9

1Wisdom has built her house;
she has carved its seven columns.
2 She has prepared a great banquet,
mixed the wines, and set the table.
3 She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come.
She calls out from the heights overlooking the city.
4 “Come in with me,” she urges the simple.
To those who lack good judgment, she says,
5 “Come, eat my food,
and drink the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live;
learn to use good judgment.”

Kevin’s Take Away: All of Proverbs 8 tells us the qualifications of /wisdom and why we would want to listen to her. In the first 6 verses of chapter 9 Lady Wisdom (God) is pursuing and inviting us into a relationship that will be of eternal benefit if we will only heed her invitation and diligently seek her and listen to her.

Proverbs 8

Today if focus is the entire chapter as a autobiography of the Holy Spirit.

Kevin’s Take Away: This entire chapter is about the Holy Spirit; describing Herself and her history being present before and during creation. This is critical to our understanding of how God interacts with us. In the Proverbs the Holy Spirit is referred to as Wisdom a wise woman wanting to be found by anyone who will pursue her. This is an illustration of the indwelling Holy Spirit in the believer. When we are born again the Holy Spirit comes to seal us and live inside of us. However, we must open the door of our will to allow the Holy Spirit to come into our thoughts and emotions. Which is what the Proverbs are trying to tell us over and over again.

Proverbs 7

1My son, keep my words,
And treasure my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and live,
And my law as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
Write them on the tablet of your heart.

Kevin’s Take Away: Soloman again today emphases the importance of having God’s word inside us, in the way we look at the world (apple of our eye), what we do with our hands (bind them on your hands) and what we feel emotionally (tablet of your heart). God wants everything we think, say and do to be guided and controlled by His word which overflows from within us.

Proverbs 6

20My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother.
21 Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck.
22 When you roam, [j]they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you;
And when you awake, they will speak with you.
23 For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

Kevin’s Take Away: Verse 21 challenges us to bind our parents’ commands on our hearts and tie them around our neck; that is to say that we take these biblical truths with us wherever we go. When we roam, sleep or are awake, God’s word will illuminate us. But we must have his word in us in a thoughts notice to keep us on the right path.

Proverbs 5

21For the LORD sees clearly what a man does,
examining every path he takes.
22 An evil man is held captive by his own sins;
they are ropes that catch and hold him.
23 He will die for lack of self-control;
he will be lost because of his great foolishness.

Kevin’s Take Away: One of the consequences of sin is that we catch ourselves in ropes of emotional bo***ge. When final judgement comes before God, everything will be revealed and evaluated against God’s holiness. Then our foolish choices will result in being “lost” for all eternity from God.

Proverbs 4

24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.

Kevin’s Take Away: Words matter, mostly because they come from the heart the center of our thoughts and feelings. If our vocabulary is vulgar, perverse, hurtful sarcastic and doesn’t build people up then it really has no value.

Proverbs 3

7Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
8 Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.
Kevin’s Take Away: Here is another reference to the fear of the Lord. Thinking we are wise and that we know best is foolish at best. Convincing ourselves that something is not evil or sinful is insulting to God and will bring his judgement! This judgement can and usually does effect our physical bodies.

Proverbs 2

3 Cry out for insight and ask for understanding.
4 Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures.
5 Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God.
Kevin’s Take Away: Yesterday we talked about the “Fear of the Lord.” Today Soloman tells us that asking God for understanding and searching out His truth will give us the correct reverent fear.

Proverbs 1

7 Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Kevin’s Take Away The fear of the Lord can be a confusing concept. The group that I meet with on Sunday nights has been working through Genesis. We are talking about Abraham and how he was able to have the faith to offer Issac as a sacrifice. We concluded that the “Fear of the Lord” for Abraham was the knowledge that when people do not do what God says (sin) that He will severely punish them. This fear was extreme respect and reverence based on a lifetime of personal observation.

Proverbs 31

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol.
5 For if they drink, they may forget the law, and not give justice to the oppressed.
6 Alcohol is for the dying, and wine for those in bitter distress.
7 Let them drink to forget their poverty, and remember their troubles no more.

Kevin’s Take Away: This is some really good practical advice about the consumption of alcohol. Scripture does not give an express prohibition against drinking alcohol, however there are a lot of cautions and warnings.

Proverbs 30

2 I am too stupid to be human, and I lack common sense.
3 I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One.
4 Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists?
Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak?
Who has created the whole wide world?
What is his name—and his son’s name?
Tell me if you know!

Kevin’s Take Away: When we consider God and His creation the reality, even though it is hard to fully understand, that while God is outside time and space, He entered time and space in the form on a man as Jesus. When we consider Him, we should feel stupid. I’m back to Life Truth #1 I don’t know what I don’t.

Proverbs 30

19 Words alone will not discipline a servant;
the words may be understood, but they are not heeded.

Kevin’s Take Away: Kevin’s Life Truth #4 ALL Choices have consequences. Good, Bad and Unintended. I’m not sure when as a society we got away from real accountability for bad behavior. I think it has been a slow gradual drift off course. God always follows through with the consequences of disobedience. Without consequences, behavior rarely changes. When we are consistent in setting boundaries and holding people accountable with actions not words, then behavior changes and life is much more enjoyable.

Why, because there is freedom in the protection/safety that boundaries provide.
