From today’s sermon: “In the depths of his despair, Job makes one of the most beautiful confessions of faith in all of Scripture: ‘I know that my redeemer lives!’ How can it be that someone can suffer and feel abandoned by God, and still confess faith? The story of Job reminds us that faith is not a human creation. It is God’s gift, and faith is God’s way of holding onto us when everything else is against us.”

Aside from Jesus, is there anyone in the Bible who is as patient as Job? If I were in Job’s situation, I cannot say I would be as patient as...

From today’s sermon: “What do you say to someone who’s suffering? What do you say when words fail? Job’s friends’ misguided efforts to comfort Job not only added to Job’s suffering but bore a false witness to God’s character. No human mind can comprehend the mysteries of God’s ways. But to dwell with someone in their pain, even in silence, testifies to the most important truth of all: God’s presence in our suffering.”

It’s not uncommon for church members to list me as a reference on scholarship or job applications, and I’m always happy to support them, par...

This Sunday, we begin a six-week sermon series on the Book of Job. He enjoyed great prosperity and was the most righteous man on earth, but after losing it all, his whole understanding of God is shattered. If God prospers the righteous and curses the unrighteous, why is he suffering?

It has all the hallmarks of a bet between gambling buddies: God holds up Job as the most righteous person on earth, “blameless and upright, ...

Have you ever considered how many of your habits, decisions, and attitudes are rooted in fear? Faith is the ultimate defiance of fear: the full confidence that the Holy Spirit, given to you in baptism, is stronger and more powerful than anything or anyone that would cause you to fear, including death.

Of all God’s commandments, the one I find most difficult to obey is this: do not fear. But wait—that’s not one of the Ten Commandments, an...

How was it that the Apostle Paul was joyful in his imprisonment? Rather than succumbing to self-pity or fear, Paul's attitude was that he was suffering in Jesus, and Jesus was suffering in him. Your spirit can be free and your heart can rejoice, because the resurrection life of Jesus will work in all things for your salvation.
