Breaking Captives Free Breaking Captives Free offers a comfortable place for hurting Christians to receive Biblical Discipleship and counsel to overcome life's challenges.

Offering Christian Discipleship

Breaking Captives Free is a small ministry run by John and Natalie Bymaster. We lovingly offer intensive Christian discipleship focused on setting people free to serve Christ. We usually meet with people once a week over dinner. We also offer intensive, 5-day discipleship retreats for those who live outside the area. Why Discipleship instead of Counseling? We offer

discipleship because we have seen many people get “counseling” with little or no results. Most believers already receive some form of counsel from church, friends, and pastors on a regular basis. Anyone reading the Word of God receives counsel and instruction also on a daily basis. Other people go through long “counseling” sessions with either psychotherapists, Christian counselors, or Biblical counselors – sometimes to no avail. Discipleship is about transforming our entire life through Christ’s teachings. It is about giving our entire life over to God, being willing to change how we approach every part of it based on God’s Word. Many times it is about rejecting sin and worldly belief systems. Other times it is simply about identifying hidden lies we believe. Life can get much easier and fruitful as a Christian when we stop acting on hidden lies we believe! Please read the website and contact us if you are someone you know can benefit from our ministry.

The Bible actually does not say anything about a counseling ministry geared to life’s difficulties. There are no parallels or anything that even remotely resembles such a ministry. Instead, God instructs all believers to minister to each other. We are all to be ministering and encouraging each other.

Biblical Counseling looks very much like psychotherapy. For example, Biblical Counseling meetings are usually called sessions. Many times, the sessions last for 60 to 90 minutes and are scheduled once or twice a week. The sessions take place in a room that is much like an office used for psychotherapy. It is very common for the counselee to talk almost the entire session while the counselor analyzes (and makes assumptions) about the counselee’s life. Each Biblical Counselor is also trained and certified. These concepts, however, are completely foreign to scripture. They follow instead the functional models of modern psychotherapy. Biblical Counseling can help some people, but usually they are the people struggling with the simplest problems to solve.

The Bible teaches something much different. Fellow Christians struggling with big problems are to be ministered to by the body of Christ, led by the Holy Spirit. They need to “do life” with as many Christians as possible. Devoted, Christian friends must be committed to telling the truth. These Christian brothers and sisters help each other live out their lives just how the Bible prescribes. It is that simple.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, let’s stop using this worldly model where “certified counselors” are the only ones qualified to address life’s deepest problems. Let’s all follow God’s way instead where all the Body of Christ humbly ministers to each another. Let’s not be idle Christians like Satan wants, let’s take action!

Forgiveness is simple. Forgiveness never changes. I learned clearly that forgiveness is a choice, but I actually learned more than just that. I also learned that when you forgive, you do not have to “forget” the transgression. I used to think that with forgiveness you also had to forget everything that happened. I thought if you forgave, then you had to move on with the relationship the same way like nothing ever happened. That is actually not true. You don’t have to forget and act like it never happened. I actually used that situation as information for how to continue a relationship with my friend. One thing you have to remember is that forgiveness can involve just one person. Relationships always involve two people. Sometimes after you forgive the other person, the relationship will not be mended. It may not be the same as it was before. In fact, it may not be the same at all. If you have truly forgiven the person, the Holy Spirit will guide you on how the relationship should be in the future or if changes need to take place. Perhaps in some severe situations, God may guide you into not continuing the relationship at all.

The biggest thing I had to learn was that forgiveness is a choice. By God’s grace, Christ forgave us of our sins so that we can have a relationship with God. I am so thankful that God forgave me through Jesus and now I can choose to forgive others.

The first reason that self-esteem is not biblical is that it disregards that as Christians, we are sinners. The Bible tells us, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3: 23). As Christians, we understand that we are a sinner. From that point, we repent. We die to self and live by the spirit. Self-esteem elevates self, instead of repentance and faith in God.

Self-esteem is the opposite of dying to self. Self-esteem is defined as “confidence in one’s own worth or abilities; self-respect,” (Oxford Dictionary). As Christians, we must have faith in Jesus’ abilities, not our own. Jesus makes us strong, just as he made Paul strong in the Bible. The Bible says, “Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproach, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong,” (2 Corinthians 12:10). Paul didn’t have self-esteem. He had Jesus.

The second reason that self-esteem is not Biblical is that it encourages pride. As Christians, we are called to be humble. In fact, the Bible says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble,” (James 4:6). Yes, God resists the proud. Could that be why I would build my self-esteem up and then it would crash over and over again?

The third reason that self-esteem is not Biblical is that it is self-serving. If you are caught up building your own self-esteem, are you able to serve others? What is your focus? Self-esteem is self-focused. As Christians, we are called to serve others. We are the hands and feet of Jesus.

As Christians, once we do fully repent, God does build us up. He builds us up through his own power and truth. He makes us stronger than we would be by ourselves. This is because we rely on his power and not our own. Could David have defeated Goliath through his own power? David would have lost if he fought in his own power, regardless of his self-confidence level. David relied on the Lord’s power and killed the giant. As Christians, we must rely on the Lord to make us strong and powerful.

“He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” ~Isaiah 61

The traditional weekly Christian discipleship option can help a suffering Christian learn Biblical truth and get counsel from a fellow believer. This will allow them to examine life’s struggles, renew their mind, and be transformed. The goal of this discipleship is to help a struggling Christian heal with the goal of living a full Christian life and bearing fruit. This discipleship is for a Christian who feels “stuck” in a rough life that is not getting better. This is for a Christian who has already sought help and/or counsel from their local church or group of believers. It is for situations where no one has been able to help.

Stress and anxiety for a Christian can take on many different shapes and forms. It can be as simple and subtle as slowly backsliding away from God or as debilitating as a full-blown panic attack. Regardless, stress will wear us down physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We need to be armed with a plan for dealing with it.

Do you know someone that is struggling with their stress? Tag them in the comments. We want to help make a plan with you and others to show you Godly ways of managing and resolving your stress.

Healing is your Covenant right. If you want it—it’s yours. It’s not up for debate, as far as the Word of God is concerned. The problem is, most Christians haven’t truly believed it. They haven’t let it reach down into their hearts and become truth to them. God has said it…but they haven’t yet believed. If that is the case with you today, know this—it is God’s will to heal you. It is in His redemptive plan. It has to be His will because He laid our sickness and disease on Jesus, just as He did our sin (Isaiah 53:5). God made His Word plain, and He always keeps His Word.

Thinking positively will greatly enhance your life and how God can use you.

“Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23).

Consider how you think about yourself. You cannot be positive if you think and express negative thoughts. You can and should continually think positive thoughts. However, you may have to act the part of the person you want to become. You may have to “fake it until you make it.”

Identify your strengths and remind yourself of them often. Do not take criticism hard. Make it a positive by using it to improve yourself. Remember: You cannot think positively if you hang around with negative people. Generally, you become like the people with whom you spend a lot of time.

Remember, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Put yourself in God’s hands. Affirm that: “the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21)
