Most American Christians have never had to suffer for their faith, but should we expect that to change?

In this episode, Lori Morrow sits down with Dr. Karen Ellis, a pioneer in Christian endurance studies, to explore what anti-Christian hostility has looked like throughout history and across cultures. From social ostracism to martyrdom, Dr. Ellis unpacks the spectrum of persecution, why it's more normal in the Christian life than we think, and what the global church can teach us about enduring with faith and hope.

Our world is full of opposites and we usually see things on one end of the spectrum or the other.

When we hear the terms sinner and saint, instant images come to mind. We tend to think of sinners as those who live a life of constant wrongdoing while saints are on the opposite end of the spectrum never doing anything wrong.

With an incorrect understanding of what a sinner and saint are, it can be difficult to correctly see ourselves. This can make it difficult to understand our need for a savior or our identity in Christ.

Postmodernism replaces God’s unchanging truth with personal opinion, making the self the standard of reality. But truth isn’t ours to create, it’s God’s to reveal.

To walk in truth, we must humble ourselves, recognizing that our feelings and desires aren’t always right. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5).

True humility surrenders to God’s standard rather than reshaping it. Only then can we find clarity, unity, and peace in a world that’s lost its anchor. “Your word is truth” (John 17:17).

If we are nothing more than matter in motion, then morality is an illusion.

Machines don’t make moral choices; they just follow programming. But deep down, we all know right and wrong are real, not random. That moral awareness points beyond the material world to a moral Lawgiver.

As Romans 2:15 says, "They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them."

We are not mere mechanisms; we are image-bearers of a moral Creator. “Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.'" (Genesis 1:26).

Our capacity for moral reasoning is evidence that we were made by a righteous and personal God, not by blind physical forces.

The Bible stands alone in its record of fulfilled prophecy.

Centuries before it happened, the prophet Isaiah foretold that Babylon would fall to the Medes and Persians, that a ruler named Cyrus would conquer the city, and that he would free the Israelites to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple (Isaiah 44:28-45:1).

These events were written nearly 200 years before Cyrus was born, an unmistakable sign of divine inspiration.

The Qur’an, by contrast, contains no verifiable prophecy. Its so-called predictions are either vague, self-fulfilling, or taken out of context.

The Bible’s fulfilled prophecies prove that it is truly the Word of God, and that Jesus Christ—the one foretold by the prophets—is the promised Savior and King (Luke 24:44; John 5:39).

Gnosticism, Christian Hope, and the Resurrection

Inside this WIA exclusive quick guide, you'll walk through the historical roots of Gnosticism, learn what it actually teaches, and see it placed side-by-side with the biblical understanding of our ultimate, true hope in Christ.

It will also help equip you to have conversations on Gnosticism and the Christian hope while remaining anchored in the gospel, objective truth, and the person of Jesus.

The way we define hope will always shape the way we live today, and this guide is meant to help you think clearly, compassionately, and biblically as you engage with others who carry this belief.
