Feeling the tug toward Church Planting?
Here are some tips to help you prepare for this endeavor. And, we do like the Team of Two approach to church planting in MO. If you are still intrigued, read on.
Tip # 1 – Read the Bible. Start to finish, then start over. Vary your translation while avoiding the really weird ones. This does not get boring and it does build faith and knowledge.
Tip # 2 – Training in church planting is good however, add to the training and advice lots of time alone with the Lord. Remember that the Holy Spirit already knows your weaknesses and strengths so let Him illuminate your path.
Tip #3 – Don’t constantly read what everyone else is doing or advising. Read a couple a year to stay current on trends but see tip 1 & 2 for your greatest help. You will need to get used to spending more time applying the knowledge. And, yes, you do need time to read fun things too.
Tip #4 – Exercise is important. If you aren’t already, start a varied exercise routine now. This not only builds physical stamina and gets you out of bed in the morning, but is also a stress reliever. Stamina and stress relief activities are needed for church planting.
Tip #5 – Build a stronger relationship with your immediate family. Church Planting is very time consuming for the first few years or until you develop those ministry helpers within the church. Work on family communication and connections now, not after you move to the mission field.
Tip # 6 – Evaluate your current personal spending. I’m not saying be a Scrooge. However, if you see areas of spending that need addressed, address them. We pay a livable wage, and there are some perks, but you will need to be frugal until the church gets built up.
Tip #7 – Start talking to people in everyday life. I know you like to preach but I am talking about off stage. Strike up conversations with people about general stuff at the grocery store, restaurants, ball games, - everywhere. Talk to all age groups, nationality histories, and social classes. Also be aware of when they are done talking at that time. Be aware of their body language.
Tip # 8 – Love the Community you are sent to. It is fruitless to attempt to start a church in Pittsburgh while cheering for anyone but the Steelers. This applies for every community. If you can’t love the community you are ministering to enough to cheer for it, don’t go.
Tip # 9 – Don’t be embarrassed to be Biblical. You don’t need to be a dictator, but people don’t follow “kinda” committed leaders. Be lovingly proud of the Holy Trinity, the Cross, Communion, and accurately teaching the Word of God. Avoid a generic use of the word “God” and specify who you are talking about. The Cross isn’t “old fashioned” it is the one symbol that immediately portrays the only One True God.
There is more to church planting of course. However, these tips should either depress the idea of church planting or excite the desire in you. If you want to know more, message me. We do have current opportunities in MO.
