LAETARE SUNDAY FOLLOW UP
After the beautiful rose-colored Masses yesterday on Laetare Sunday, several parishioners requested that we sing the Latin Introit for which the Sunday is named. For those who want to get a head start on it for next year:

This Sunday is LAETARE SUNDAY, a day of rejoicing and refreshment in the middle of the Lenten Fast. The clergy wear rose vestments, anticipating the light of resurrection at the end of the long tunnel of dying to self that is our life's journey, and the ORGAN PLAYS (yes, our new organ, half done), prefiguring the "new song" of the New Creation.

The first words of the Mass are those of the Introit:

Lætáre Ierúsalem: et convéntum fácite omnes qui dilígitis eam: gaudéte cm lætítia, qui in tristítia fuístis: ut exsultétis, et satiémini ab ubéribus consolatiónis vestræ.

Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast.

These comforting words are for all who are in exile and penitent, turning toward our home in the place where God dwells. They also prefigure the comfort that awaits the soon-to-be neophytes, the newly baptized who we will witness rising with Christ from the waters of baptism at the Easter Vigil. (Are you going to the Easter Vigil? Go, if you want to witness Jesus rising from the tomb, and the birth of new "Christlings" from the womb of Mother Church!)

We will then sing to the neophytes another song of maternal comfort: Like newborn infants, you must long for the pure, spiritual milk, that in him you may grow to salvation, alleluia.

Because of maternal images in the Introit for Mass, Laetare Sunday has also been celebrated in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the British Commonwealth as "Mothering Sunday." Happy mother's day to those celebrating!
