Even among Lutherans today there several misconceptions about what Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) actually means. This week's episode of Ask The Pastor works towards dispelling those misconceptions.

For nearly a decade we have met monthly in a family's home for catechesis, Divine Service, and Bible study. While we typically think of "church" as happening in a building dedicated for that purpose, the fourth stanza of today's sermon hymn (TLH 467, "Built on the Rock, the Church doth Stand") reminds us of the truth we experience each month at our mission congregation: It is not the building which sanctifies the word and worshipers, but the word of God purely preached which sanctifies the space and the people who hear it with good and honest hearts.

Now we may gather with our King
E'en in the lowliest dwelling;
Praises to Him we there may bring,
His wondrous mercy forthtelling.
Jesus His grace to us accords;
Spirit and life are all His words;
His truth doth hallow the temple.
