Wrapping up this series of posts about our synod (our national church body):

2022 Evangelical Lutheran Synod document, The Flavor of the ELS: “Lift Up Your Hearts – Your Sins Are Forgiven.”

Here is an outline of the five points (things to know about us):

In 2022, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (our national church body) produced a document, The Flavor of the ELS: “Lift Up Your Hearts – Your Sins Are Forgiven.”

Here is the last of five points in this document:

5. The ELS is compassionate toward those who are in difficult confessional situations.

Since its formation in 1918, our synod has welcomed pastors, congregations, and individuals from various backgrounds who have been left without a confessional Lutheran home. This compassion has made the ELS a “melting pot” of various backgrounds gathered around pure doctrine and practice.

We view the church’s history, our synod’s history, and our current circumstances through the lens of the “theology of the cross” – “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Cor. 1:18, NKJV)

By His grace, the Lord has kept the ELS steadfast in His Word. It was noted at our 75th anniversary:

A church body that finds as its highest priority the correct understanding and proclamation of the Gospel will never be a failure in the Lord’s eyes. The Savior’s call is to faithfulness, above all, faithfulness to His Word of Truth.

The central truth of Scripture – that Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, has overcome sin, death, and hell by His death and resurrection – stands at the center of the ELS and its preaching and teaching. As such, every sermon is to direct the hearer to the risen Christ as the fulfillment of the Scripture text and as the only hope and source of forgiveness and eternal life. The Law serves it place, but the Gospel of forgiveness, which is “sweeter than honey,” must predominate in any sermon. The ELS strives to be what its name says – “evangelical.”

The Lutheran Difference: The Special “Flavor” of the ELS

In 2022, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod – our national church body – produced a document, The Flavor of the ELS: “Lift Up Your Hearts – Your Sins Are Forgiven.”

1. The ELS has a Gospel predominance.
2. The ELS has a non-hierarchical form of organization.
3. The ELS is a liturgical Lutheran church body with a traditional approach to the Divine Service.

This week we consider the fourth of five points in this document.

4. The ELS prioritizes a Christ-centered liberal arts education.

This is demonstrated through the support of Lutheran elementary and high school education, and also Bethany Lutheran College which readies individuals with the “One Thing Needful” to serve their Savior and His Church in various vocations. [2027 is the 100th anniversary of Bethany Lutheran College as our synod’s college.]

We also view our schools as vehicles by which we are enabled to reach students beyond the ELS with the Gospel.

"The Special Flavor of the ELS"

In 2022, our synod produced a document called The Flavor of the ELS: “Lift Up Your Hearts – Your Sins Are Forgiven.” This week we consider the third of five points in this document.

3. The ELS is a liturgical Lutheran church body with a traditional approach to the Divine Service.

This flavor is exhibited in a traditional, historical approach to worship. It includes (but is not limited to) Norwegian Lutheran influences on liturgy and hymnody. These influences are preserved with the publication of the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary [the hymnal that our congregation uses], published in 1996; it combines the traditions of the Lutheran Hymnary (1913) and The Lutheran Hymnal (1941).

Although there is a variety in worship through which congregations maintain their local customs, the regular worship in our synod is marked by a healthy caution toward assumed improvements via innovation in liturgy and hymns.

This Sunday in the church year is about the need for the church to cling to true doctrine and reject false doctrine. It’s not only important to confess the truth; it’s equally important to openly and forthrightly condemn what is false. Jesus specifically highlights the need to beware of false teaching.

The Lutheran church father C.F.W. Walther said: “How foolish it is when they ridicule pure doctrine and say to us: ’Stop clamoring, Pure doctrine, pure doctrine! That can lead only to dead orthodoxy. Focus on pure living instead; that way you will cause growth in genuine Christianity.’ That would be like saying to a farmer, ’Stop fretting about good seed! Be concerned about good fruit instead.’ But isn’t a farmer properly concerned about good fruit when he is concerned about good seed? In the same way, to be concerned about pure doctrine IS to be concerned about genuine Christianity and a sincere Christian life."
