As we celebrate the Independence Day holiday in America this weekend, may we reflect on what freedom truly is (and what it is not).
True freedom isn’t being free from all authorities, rules, guidance or expectations. It isn’t the condition where one gets to do what he wants, when he wants, how he wants, without any consequences. (That is a condition of bo***ge to the human will, which is enslaved to sin and its evil, self-fulfilling desires.)
Freedom, or liberty, is the attitude enjoyed when the right authority is maintained in our lives.
This is the liberty that is championed in Paul’s writing the Galatian believers.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bo***ge.”
Galatians 5:1 NKJV
Liberty, and true freedom, is gained only by believing the gospel and asking God to forgive and save us through Jesus’s death on the cross. (See Romans 10:9-10)
Therefore, ultimate freedom includes the opportunity to live under God’s rule knowing that His ways are best.
What about the freedom that is celebrated on July 4th? There is freedom to be enjoyed in relationship to civil authority. Civil freedom is born out of the establishment and submission to an earthly authority which parallels God’s good guidance, protection and provision. Civil freedom includes the liberty to recognize God’s supremacy in our lives and so worship Him (hence the 1st amendment in the Bill of Rights).
Therefore, the best leaders on earth are servant-leaders, like Jesus, willing to wash feet in service to those He loved (and would ultimately die for).
Let us pray for leaders who personally model leadership the way that Jesus did. May we pray for our country.
Let us strive to lead in our homes, churches, and communities in a way that honors God as the ultimate authority.
Let us submit to the Word of God and its perfect guidance so that we may enjoy ultimate freedom.
Go in peace, Be free.
