LORD, find us and mercy us!

Since I have worked as a chaplain at a general hospital in Atlanta, GA, USA, I have met patients and medical staff daily. Sometimes, I feel lonely among scores of people around me. The patients and staff may sometimes feel the same way as I did.

I found a lady who was sick for 12 years. Her multiple and seamless attempts to get well didn't succeed. Her best efforts didn't work out. Jesus told us a story about a lady patient in the Bible:

There was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.

She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garments. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well. And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.

And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” (Mark 5:25-30)

When I listened to Jesus my LORD, I was deeply moved by what He did for her, the sick lady for 12 years. He immediately turned about in the crowd. He was on the way to visit a dying girl who was 12 years old. Her father was one of the rulers of the synagogue. The crowd followed Jesus closely to see what would happen to the girl. This lady and her life were not concerned at all with anyone but Jesus! Our LORD turned about to find her! Oh, LORD, turn about and find me, mercy me. Count my tears, LORD!

Jesus my LORD said, "Who touched my garments?" He was looking for the sick lady for 12 years. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease." (Mark 5:34)

Dear my fellow workers, let us come close to the LORD who leads us in green pastures. Oh, LORD, mercy on me, mercy on us, mercy on sinners, and mercy on the sick! Amen.

자연은 서두르지 않는다. 그렇다고 게으르지도 않다.

과일나무를 여러그루 심고 이틀에 한번 아침마다 물을 듬뿍 준다. 복숭아나무가 비교적 초봄 일찍 움이 돋고 꽃을 피우지만 그에 비해 사과나무, 감나무, 자두나무는 시기가 늦다. 피칸나무는 아직 움도 트지 않았다. 같은 사과나무, 자두나무라 할지라도 품종에 따라 이미 움이 튼 것도 있고 아직 움트지 못한채 죽은 듯 서있는 나무도 있다. 동일한 품종의 나무라 할지라도 그 나무 자체의 발달상태와 심기운 땅의 토질에 따라 움트는 시기가 약간 달라지기도 한다. 자연은 서두르지 않는다. 그렇다고 게으르지도 않다. 조물주께서 정해주신대로 자기에게 주어진 삶을 만족하며 감사로 매일을 열고 성실하고 느긋하게 살아간다.
크산토포울루스의 칼리스투스(콘스탄티노플의 총대주교)와 크산토포울루스의 이그나티우스(은둔 수도사)가 함께 쓴 헤시카스트들에게 준 가르침 (59번. 자기의 능력 이상의 것을 구하지 말라는 권면)에서 이렇게 가르쳐 준다:
때가 되면 오게 될 것을 앞질러 구하지 마십시오.
선한 것이라고 해도 행하는 방법이 옳지 못하면 더 이상 선한 것이 아닙니다.
내 마음처럼 신속하게 해결되지 않는 문제가 있는가? 이렇게 되든, 저렇게 되든 하루빨리 결판을 내고 싶은 일이 있는가?
조급하게 마음 먹으면 잘 되어가는 일조차도 그르칠 수 있다. 나 자신에게 혹은 상대방에게 시간을 주라. 결정하지 못하고 고민하고 있는 사람을 여유있게 넉넉히 기다려 주라. 그 사람이 나 자신이든, 내 마음이든, 타인이든 우리는 느긋하게 기다려 줌으로서 예수님의 사랑을 실천하게 된다.
