Happy Labor Day!!!!

“From Wesley’s time to the present day, Methodists have affirmed a central moral truth: people, not profits, must remain at the heart of any just economic system.”

"You shall not withhold the wages of poor and needy laborers, whether other Israelites or aliens who reside in your land... You shall pay them their wages daily before sunset, because they are poor and their livelihood depends on them..." — Deuteronomy 24:14–15 Since its earliest days, the Metho...

It started as a TikTok trend, it turned into an outreach ministry.

"We Listen and We Don't Judge" is a trend that has taken different forms. For Pastor Erin Hernandez and the congregation of Sleepy Eye: Faith UMC, the trend felt perfect for a ministry setting. Faith UMC translated this into an event at local coffee shops, where community members come and are heard. Utilizing this trend has gotten teens interested in this event--once they come, the conversations and care keep them there.

The young people who come to this weekly event have a lot of curious questions about what the Bible actually says—and how they can understand it in a practical sense. “Our lay leaders are able to address these questions using the parables and other methods…the ripple effect we are having is laying the groundwork for great things,” noted Hernandez.

“We are reaching people we don’t reach inside. Connecting people with Christ, and people with people: that is what we are trying to do.”

By salvation I mean, not barely (according to the vulgar notion) deliverance from hell, or going to heaven, but a present deliverance from sin, a restoration of the soul to its primitive health… the renewal of our souls after the image of God in righteousness and true holiness, in justice, mercy, and truth. ~ John Wesley(Farther Appeal to Men of Reason and Religion)

"Then Jesus told his disciples, 'If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.'" - Matthew 16:24-25

Jesus counsels that a full life is one lived in holy connection--not one lived for selfish gain. May we direct our thoughts and actions towards reflecting God's priorities in the world today as we pray:
Lord of grace and goodness,

You call us to set ourselves aside
and to follow after you,
seeking your aspirations and hopes.

May we start this day with a sense
of connection and guidance.
May your thoughts be our thoughts.
May we seek to love as you love.
May our words and actions this day be a reflection of your presence.

Amen.
