Greenwood United Methodist Church is a small country church located just west of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Sunday morning Bible Study starts at 10 am.

Regular services begin at 11 am. Wednesday evening youth services start at 6 pm and end at 8 pm.

One Willing Heart

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.” ~ James 4:8

Do you ever feel that God is far away? Or perhaps that you just aren’t as close to him as you should be? I think we all find ourselves in this boat at times.

It’s so easy to become distracted and focus on things that are going on around us. We lead hectic, busy lives for the most part, and find ourselves constantly on the run. There are so many days where, after spending many hours working I rush home, cook dinner, feed my crew, then barely have a moment before its time to crash for the night, because that alarm will inevitably sound way too early the next morning.

If only we could take a break from all the busyness and spend some serious time with God! (Insert eye-roll here!)

I have to admit that some days carving out time with God is easier than others. But it all boils down to the fact that I have to MAKE that time. After all, God never moves – he’s always right where I left him. I am the problem. I’m the one who wanders away. There will always be a thousand tasks waiting to claim my attention. It’s a never-ending cycle of “stuff.” Sure, my life is busy and hectic – so is almost anyone else’s. But if I allow this “stuff” to steal away my “Father/daughter” time, I’m missing the whole point. I’m missing EVERYTHING!

God WANTS to be close to us. And our whole goal in trudging through this life is (or should be) to be close to him. James tells us that to be close to God, all we have to do is ALLOW him to come close to us. When we hit those periods where we feel small, neglected and alone, those are the moments when we most need to stop, and just invite him to come closer.

Father, remind me today to walk closely to you. When I become distracted and wander away, please grab my attention so that I may quickly return to your side.

Lord our God, in the name of Jesus Christ, who is close at our side as the risen and living One, we lift our eyes to you in prayer. Bless us. Bless us through your Word, and let our hearts become quiet in you. Free us from all restlessness and from the turmoil of the present age, for we belong to you, not to the world. We want to find peace in you and remain in you. You will care for us as your children, whom you will never forget in all eternity. Bless us and renew the riches of your grace in us every day, for you, O Lord our God, remain our Father. In Christ's Holy Name, Amen.
