Memorial Day,
originally called Decoration Day, originated in the years following the American Civil War to honor fallen soldiers. First widely proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by General John A. Logan, it was established as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with spring flowers.The holiday's history and evolution include several key milestones:
The First Observances: While dozens of local springtime tributes took place after the Civil War (including early observances by formerly enslaved people in Charleston, South Carolina), the federal government officially recognizes Waterloo, New York, as the holiday's birthplace. Waterloo first hosted a community-wide, annual event on May 5, 1866.
Decoration Day (1868): General Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (an organization of Union veterans), chose May 30 for the holiday, likely because spring flowers would be in full bloom across the country. The first major national ceremony occurred at Arlington National Cemetery that same year.
