Buona Festa!
Today, May 10th, the St. Alfio Society celebrates our patrons—Saints Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino.
This year, we also celebrate Mother’s Day, remembering the woman who made their courage possible: their mother, Saint Benedicta.
A Mother’s Shield:
Before the brothers reached Lentini, Saint Benedicta stood as their first protector. She died at the hands of Roman persecutors while shielding her sons, leaving them a legacy of faith that no torture could break.
The Brothers’ Passion:
Left to face their fate in 253 AD, they remained unshakable:
• Alfio had his tongue torn out for preaching the Gospel.
• Filadelfo was martyred on a gridiron.
• Cirino was cast into boiling oil.
They died together, fueled by the strength their mother first showed them. Today, we honor the sons’ sacrifice and the maternal love that sparked it.
Viva Sant’ Alfio! Viva Sant’ Filadelfo! Viva Sant’ Cirino!
Happy Mother’s Day to the women who keep our traditions alive.
