As we prepare to welcome the High Holy Days and the New Year 5787, we begin with the deeply meaningful service of Selichot.

The name Selichot speaks to the meaning of this sacred season: to reflect upon our lives, to consider where we might have chosen differently, and to seek growth, renewal, and positive change in the year ahead.

Selichot also draws us closer together as our Temple Israel family, reminding us of the strength we find in each other and inviting us to open our hearts to God’s presence, love, and forgiveness.

May this sacred season lead us toward a year filled with goodness, blessing, peace, and hope.

Part Two - These pages from The Diapason give us a glimpse into the organ that shaped Temple Israel's early musical life.

1931: The first organ at Temple Israel in Lawrence is announced, with Samuel Quincy listed as Organist and Musical Director.

1933: Quincy shares his appreciation for the instrument, writing about its beautiful voicing and how the congregants wanted to hear and see it up close.

1940: The Diapason lists John Harms as Organist and Choirmaster. A Schantz Organs advertisement also appears, foreshadowing the replacement organ to come.

Nearly a century later, we continue our musical traditions with our Schantz pipe organ installed in 1993. Hear our Organist and Music Director Christian Cang-Cuesta in our other post.

For generations, the pipe organ has filled Temple Israel’s sanctuary with beautiful music. Located high above the bimah, its eight ranks of pipes are hidden behind the shutters, leaving most of us to experience its sound without ever seeing the instrument that creates it.

Our original Pilcher organ was installed in 1930, gifted by Mr. and Mrs. William Fox (Founder of the Fox Film Corp). In 1993, it was upgraded to our current Schantz pipe organ. The chime bells from the original Pilcher were kept and are still played today. This longstanding tradition of ringing the chimes can be heard during the High Holy Days meditation, My Country ’Tis of Thee.
