On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed, calling our ancestors “merciless Indian savages.”

While many celebrate freedom, Native peoples were never meant to be part of that promise. Citizenship did not come until 1924, and we still face the legacy of broken treaties and injustice.

But we hold to a greater truth.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
Galatians 5:1

Our freedom is not rooted in empire but in Jesus, a brown skinned man from an occupied land who came to set all people free.

Today we remember. We grieve. We hope.
And we walk in the freedom only Creator can give.

On this Arbor Day, we pause to recognize the Creator’s provision through the trees—offering beauty, shelter, nourishment, and life.

Many Native peoples speak of trees with deep respect. They’ve long been signs of rootedness, strength, and renewal. In Scripture, trees also remind us of God’s presence and faithfulness:

“They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” (Isaiah 61:3, NIV)

May we care for creation as a reflection of our Creator’s love.
And may we be like the trees—rooted in hope, growing in faith.

Today is Earth Day. And here at Haskell, we’re walking the good road—together.

This morning we begin with our 9 AM Prayer Walk, starting at the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum, as we lift up our campus, community, and the land we walk on.

At lunch, we’ll gather in Curtis Hall to share stories, connect, and encourage one another.

And tonight at 7 PM, we invite you into Talking Circle at Indian Avenue Baptist Church—a space to listen, reflect, and grow in community.

Our Native ways teach us to walk with respect, to care for the land, and to see creation as sacred.
And Scripture reminds us: “The Creator placed the first human in the garden… to care for it and watch over it.” (Genesis 2:15)

Let’s honor Creator by honoring Creation—through prayer, community, and stewardship.

Pope Francis has passed, and for many Native people, his legacy brings up a mix of emotions. He wasn’t perfect—but he tried to walk with humility, to listen, and to repent. In this reflection, we explore what his life teaches us about following Creator Sets Free (Jesus), walking the Good Road, and being welcomed home with the words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

This week, the world said goodbye to Pope Francis—a global religious leader who tried, in many ways, to embody the teachings of Christ not just with his words, but with his life. For many Native people, especially those of us who follow Jesus, moments like this bring up complex emotions. The histor...

On this Resurrection Sunday, we celebrate the moment that changed everything—the moment when Creator Sets Free (Jesus) rose from the dead, defeating death and bringing hope, healing, and new life to all creation. This good road of following Jesus isn’t just about someday far off in the sky. It’s about restoration here and now—within our hearts, in our communities, and across our homelands.

For many Native people, time moves in circles, not straight lines. And today, we remember that Easter is not just a one-time event—it’s part of the sacred circle of renewal. Creator’s story is one of bringing life out of death, beauty from ashes, and hope from despair. We walk in this resurrection story daily, inviting Jesus to heal our wounds and restore our relationships with Creator, creation, and each other.

May the power of the risen Christ meet you today wherever you are—with peace, with love, and with strength to keep walking the good road.

After the Powwow: Let’s Keep Walking in Strength -

This past weekend, the drums of the Haskell Resistance Powwow didn’t just echo across campus — they echoed across generations. The songs, regalia, and movements spoke of strength in the face of oppression, beauty born from struggle, and joy passed down through survival.

Today, our hearts are heavy as we stand in support of the faculty, staff, and students affected by the recent layoffs at Haskell Indian Nations University. These are not just jobs lost—they are mentors, role models, and community members who have poured into the lives of students and helped shape the future of Native education.

We also recognize that several events, including the 3rd Annual Entrepreneurship Summit and the Haskell Welcome Back Powwow, have been canceled or postponed, adding to the sense of loss and disruption.

At HINU Fellowship, we remain committed to walking alongside our students during this difficult time, offering prayer, support, and community. We recognize the uncertainty this brings, and we want our students to know: you are not alone. We are here for you.

For those impacted, if you need someone to talk to, pray with, or simply stand with you, please reach out. We will continue to advocate for the well-being of our Haskell family and trust that Creator will guide us all through this season.

We are also grateful to the Haskell Greenhouse for providing Eastern red cedar bundles to the HINU community, available at the front entrance of Tommaney Library. We encourage you to take part in this offering of healing and connection to Creator.

Numerous employees of Haskell Indian Nations University lost their jobs Friday as part of sweeping nationwide cuts ordered by President Donald Trump's administration.
