Last Wednesday, we were able to gather (without power) outdoors and worship in the beauty of the Lord’s light to break bread together as a community. As the sun set behind our church, we were able to end by singing of the Lord’s many blessings. May we be reminded of the beauty and light of community, the blessings of the Lord’s faithfulness, and the goodness of His grace in the weeks to come. May this memory serve as a reminder of the Lord’s light in the midst of darkness.

It’s been quite a different look over the past couple of weeks, with lots of news that is heartbreaking for our area and west of us in WNC through the wake of Helene. But there have also been pockets of light! Here are some images of what we’ve been up to as a church body, including gathering to break bread without power, serving our community and first responders at Shelby Mission Camp, and collecting (truckloads!) of donations for Polkville Volunteer Fire Department to take to devastated small communities in WNC.

Friends, as an update regarding our schedule for tomorrow, we will not gather for Sunday School at 10:00am, but in light of power being restored on our church campus, we will gather inside the church building at 11:00am for worship. We will hold a simplified worship service and end in a time of prayer over any donations collected tomorrow. We hope to see you there!

Regarding tomorrow evening, we will not hold our evening Bible study, but the youth will meet at 6:00pm to set up the pumpkin patch.

As a note and reminder about donations, we will continue to collect donations of toilet paper, paper towels, nonperishable food items, bottled water, clothing, and hygienic products tomorrow and they will be delivered this week. If you can find those products, or spare them (which is still understandably difficult for our own area at this time), we will receive those tomorrow and close with a time of prayer over them as a church family. Regardless of whether or not you can offer donations, though, you are more than welcome to join us tomorrow morning for worship and we hope to see you there! All are welcome.

Friends, this has certainly been an unprecedented time for our own community, and a devastating event for our family, friends, sisters, and brothers to our west. Although we usually gather for our Wednesday evening community suppers on the second Wednesday of each month, which we still plan to do next week, we could all use a little community and fellowship in our lives right now.

So, we will plan to gather tomorrow evening at 5:30pm to break bread together, pray, and sing a few hymns. We will break bread as a community of Christ in Cleveland County, but also pray for our neighbors to our west and all those suffering from the catastrophic devastation in the wake of Helene. We may not have power at the church by campus tomorrow evening, but we will plan to eat outside on the church lawn and open the church for bathroom facilities. Please note that you will need to park in the front circle drive or the upper half of the parking lot to the side of the church due to downed trees and lines in the lowest section.

If you have power and access to food to spare, please plan to cook what you can(l (with the understanding that we may not have power at the church campus) and come by 5:30. If you don’t have power or food to spare, please plan to come and fill your bellies with food and your hearts with the joy of community. If you know of neighbors, friends, family, and strangers that would be able to gather with us or could use access to food, please invite them as well.

In addition, we will be taking donations tomorrow evening (and again later in the week) for Shelby Mission Camp, which will be used as a shelter for the medically fragile evacuees by NCEMS for the next couple of weeks, and for Polkville Fire Department, who is serving displaced folks from the Chimney Rock area. We are asking for donations of toilet paper, paper towels, basic hygiene items, bottled water, and no perishable snack/food items. Any and all of these items are greatly appreciated and will go to these places in Thursday! We hope to see you tomorrow evening at 5:30 to break bread together. Blessings!

Friends, related to the mention of our friends, family, brothers, and sisters to our west in the mountains and the catastrophic devastation that they are suffering, please consider ways to be involved in efforts to respond.
