Saude, Jerico, & Redeemer Lutherans The Saude, Jerico, and Redeemer Lutheran Churches are located in Chickasaw County, Iowa. Saude and Jerico were originally served by the Rev. U. V.

Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church (est. 1857) has divine services at 10:30am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month and 8:30am on the 2nd and 4th. Jerico Evangelical Lutheran Church (est. 1867) has divine services at 8:30am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays and 10:30am on the 2nd and 4th. Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church (est. 1941) has divine services at 4:00pm each Saturday. Saude, Jerico, and Re

deemer are member churches of the "Evangelical Lutheran Synod," formerly known as the "Norwegian Synod." Koren, who founded a number of congregations in northeast Iowa. These congregations in turn helped start the Redeemer church as a mission in the town of New Hampton. The three congregations are currently served by Pastor Peter Faugstad.

Pastor H. M. Tjernagel served the Jerico and Saude parish from 1923-1940. He started The Assistant Pastor church newsletter 100 years ago in 1926. Those newsletters are available on our church website: https://saudejerico.com/history/.

Helge (Henry) Mathias Tjernagel was born May 23, 1871 on Follinglo Farm near Story City, Iowa to Ole Andreas and Martha Karina (nee Anderson Follinglo) Tjernagel. He studied at Luther College (B. A.) 1888-1894 and Luther Seminary, Hamline 1899-1902 (C.T.)

Tjernagel worked as a farmer and teacher 1894-1898 then taught at Luther Academy, Albert Lea, Minnesota, 1898-1899.

After his ordination in 1902, Tjernagel served as pastor at Stanwood, Washington, 1902-1910, Teller, Alaska 1910-1913, Santa Barbara, California 1913-1916, Crookston, Minnesota, 1917-1918, the Indian Mission of the Missouri Synod in Gresham, Wisconsin, 1918-1923, and the Saude and Jerico parish near Lawler, Iowa, 1923-1940.

Tjernagel served the “Old Synod” on the Pacific District Home Mission Committee 1903-1910, and the Eskimo Mission Committee, 1905-1910. He was the manager of the “Pacific Herold” 1905-1910, and served as president of the Josephine Old Age Home [now (2012) called the Josphine Sunset Home] committee 1908-1910.

Tjernagel was President of the Norwegian Synod 1930-1934.

On June 27, 1904, Tjernagel married Anna Brue. They were blessed with twelve children, four of whom died in infancy. Anna died November 24, 1924.
