MIDWEEK IS TONIGHT!!!

Some things Jesus does make perfect sense to us.

And some things… don’t.

The timing feels off.
The method isn’t what we expected.
The answer doesn’t look anything like what we prayed for.

But what if not understanding what Jesus is doing doesn’t mean He isn’t doing something GOOD?

Tonight, Codey is taking us to Mark 7 for a reminder we ALL need:

WHEN JESUS CROSSES THE LINE
📖 Mark 7:24–30

Last night at Avenue Students, we continued through Mark and were reminded of a truth we can never afford to forget:

We bring nothing to Jesus that makes us worthy of Him, we come because He is our only hope.

In Mark 7, a Gentile woman, an outsider by every cultural and religious boundary of the day, comes desperately to Jesus for her daughter.

She goes straight to His feet.

1. JESUS IS WILLING TO CROSS OUR BOUNDARIES.

This woman did not belong according to the lines people had drawn.

But those boundaries were not boundaries for Jesus.

When Jesus shows up, boundaries are broken, and walls come down.

We are quick to decide who is in, who is out, who deserves grace, and who is too far gone.

But Jesus crosses the lines we draw.

2. JESUS TESTS A FAITH THAT REFUSES TO GIVE UP.

She does not immediately receive the answer she wants, but she stays.

She keeps trusting, she keeps believing, she remains at His feet.

Just because God makes you wait does not mean He is absent.

Sometimes faith is continuing to trust when you do not understand what God is doing. Her hope was not simply in getting an answer.

Her hope was in Him.

3. JESUS’ GRACE REACHES THE OUTSIDER.

It is easy to read this story and think she is the outsider.

But the gospel reminds us that we are the undeserving ones.

The ground is level at the foot of the cross. None of us comes to Jesus with anything that makes us worthy of His grace.

“The only thing we bring to Jesus is the sin that put Him on the cross.”

Yet He gives us grace.

There are not those who need Jesus and those who have somehow earned their way to Him.

There are sinners, and then there is a Savior.

So when we are desperate, waiting, broken, or have absolutely nothing to offer Him…

How dare we do anything else but fall at the feet of Jesus?

Our hope is not in ourselves.

Our only hope is Jesus.

The Word will be opened.

Now there’s just one question…

WHO’S YOUR ONE MORE?

Don’t overthink it. Send the text. Make the call. Save them a seat.

Tonight we’re continuing through Mark 7 and looking at a Jesus who crosses boundaries, meets people where they are, and reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of His grace.

Come ready to worship. Come ready for the Word. And don’t come alone.

The Back to School Youth Rally at South Jones is happening tonight and is open to any student who wants to attend! We encourage you to go and be part of it!

Avenue will still meet at our normal time tonight, but please feel free to attend the rally instead. Just remember that Avenue Students will not be providing transportation to or from South Jones.

Wherever you’re gathering tonight , show up. Worship Jesus. Bring somebody with you.

Tomorrow night, we’re back together for MIDWEEK and continuing through the Gospel of Mark.

📖 Mark 7:24–30 | When Jesus Crosses the Line

In this passage, Jesus goes where others wouldn’t go and reaches someone others would have considered an outsider.

And maybe there’s something in that for us before we ever walk through the doors tomorrow night.

Who are we willing to reach?
Who are we willing to invite?
Who is our ONE MORE?

Don’t just think about them. Text them. Ask them. Bring them.

Because one invitation might seem small to you, but God can use it to change everything.

And tomorrow night, there are two opportunities for students in our community to gather around Jesus.

The Back to School Youth Rally at South Jones is open to ANY student who wants to attend, and we encourage you to be there! (Avenue Students/ Journey Church will not be providing transportation)

Avenue Midweek is ALSO happening at our normal time. 🙌

The world will tell you to keep going.

Do more. Try harder. Keep up. Don’t fall behind.

And during a school week, it’s easy to believe that your worth is somehow connected to how well you’re doing.

But Jesus never said, “Come to Me when you have it all together.”

He said:

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Not when the homework is finished.
Not when the grade comes up.
Not when the friendship gets easier.
Not when you finally feel like you’re doing enough.

Now.

Jesus wants you in the good moments AND the hard ones.

So whatever this week is already putting on your shoulders…

Work hard, but don’t carry the weight of your worth.
Care about tomorrow, but don’t be consumed by it.
Do what you can, then trust God with what you can’t.

Biblical rest isn’t pretending there’s nothing to worry about. It’s knowing Who holds you in the middle of it.

You don’t have to have everything figured out to rest in Him.

Come to Jesus.
Give Him what’s heavy.

And rest.

SOMETHING BRAND NEW IS COMING TO AVENUE!

Introducing AVENUE PARENT NIGHT! 🤍

On Wednesday, September 9th, we’re doing something new. We are bringing our Avenue Students AND their parents together for one special night in the sanctuary!

Because here’s what we believe: we’re a team.

Parents, YOU are the greatest influence in your student’s life. Our job isn’t to replace what happens at home… it’s to come alongside you, support you, encourage you, and help point your student toward Jesus every chance we get.

And we are genuinely so thankful that you trust us to disciple alongside you during these incredibly important years. We don’t take that responsibility lightly. ❤️

At Avenue Parent Night, we’ll worship together, dive into God’s Word together, and spend some intentional time talking about where we’re headed this year at Avenue Students.

You’ll also get the inside scoop on everything ahead. Things like upcoming events, camps, costs, important dates, opportunities for your student to get involved, and more!

But more than anything, we want this night to remind our students that they have an entire TEAM in their corner (parents, leaders, and their church family ) loving them, praying for them, and pointing them toward Jesus.

Parents, we strongly encourage you to make plans to be there with your student!

There’s just something about having everyone under one roof again.

Summer was sweet, but tonight the room felt a little fuller. School is back, our students are back, and we’re stepping into a brand new season together.

Different schools. Different hallways. One family. One mission. One Jesus.

This year, we’re not just going back to school, we’re being sent into it.

Ave. Midweek Sermon Recap!

The Reality of the Heart-Mark 7:14–23

Last night, John Marshall reminded us of a truth that isn’t always easy to hear:

Our greatest problem isn’t what’s happening around us, it’s what’s happening within us.

Jesus teaches that what defiles a person isn’t something external. The issue has always been the heart. We can look the part, say the right things, and even do all the “right” Christian things, yet still have hearts that are far from God. Outward behavior may fool people, but it never fools the Lord.

1. The Heart is Deceptive

Our hearts can deceive us into believing that outward appearance is enough. We may look one way at church and another everywhere else, but Jesus reminds us that our words and actions always reveal what’s truly inside. As Luke 6:45 says, “The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” Eventually, what’s in the heart will come out.

2. The Heart is Defiling

Because the heart is sinful by nature, sinful actions aren’t the root problem, they’re the fruit of the problem. That’s why behavior modification can never produce lasting change. John challenged us to guard our hearts, surrender them to Christ daily, and take up our cross. Only when Jesus has our hearts can our lives begin to reflect Him.

3. The Heart Must Be Renewed

Our old, sinful heart cannot fix itself. Left unchecked, sin gains a stronghold and slowly destroys us from the inside out. But the gospel gives us hope: Jesus doesn’t simply make bad people behave better…He makes dead hearts alive. He alone can remove our sinful heart and give us a new one.

Don’t settle for looking the part. Let Jesus transform you from the inside out.
