In Poland, Corpus Christi is one of the most important and beautiful public expressions of the Catholic faith. It is not simply a procession around the church grounds; it is a public witness of faith that often involves the entire parish and community.
After the celebration of Holy Mass, the congregation leaves the church and follows the Blessed Sacrament in a solemn Eucharistic procession through the streets. The priest carries the monstrance under a canopy, while the faithful accompany Our Lord with prayers and hymns.
Along the route, four outdoor altars are prepared by parish groups, families, or organizations. At each altar, the procession stops. A passage from one of the four Gospels is proclaimed, representing Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. After the Gospel reading, a brief reflection or homily may be given, followed by prayers and a Eucharistic blessing.
The four altars symbolize the proclamation of the Gospel to the four corners of the world and remind us that Christ is present not only in the church building but also in the midst of our communities.
The procession itself is very colorful and prayerful. Altar servers lead the way carrying the processional cross, candles, banners, and parish flags. Members of parish organizations often carry religious banners and statues. Many people pray the Rosary or sing traditional Eucharistic hymns throughout the procession.
One of the most beloved traditions is the participation of young children. Girls who recently received First Holy Communion often wear their white dresses and scatter flower petals before the Blessed Sacrament. In many places, boys ring small bells as the procession moves forward.
The outdoor altars are beautifully decorated with flowers, greenery, birch branches, images of saints, and religious symbols. In some regions of Poland, entire streets are covered with elaborate carpets made from flower petals. This unique tradition has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
For many Polish Catholics, Corpus Christi is a public profession of faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It is a moment when the Church literally brings Christ into the streets, asking His blessing upon homes, families, workplaces, and the entire community.
