Vegas Valley Church Of Christ

Vegas Valley Church Of Christ Instead, we encourage those who seek the truth to examine each congregation in comparison to the scriptures. Amen" (Ephesians 3:20-21).

We're not the only church of Christ; there are others (Romans 16:16), each distinguished by location (1st Corinthians 1:2; 1st Thessalonians 1:1), but every one of which should maintain consistency with the doctrine set forth by the Lord's apostles (Acts 2:42; 1st Corinthians 4:17; 7:17). Those churches which drift away from the truth may be disowned by Jesus (Revelation 2:1-5); therefore we withhold blanket endorsements of all that claim to be churches of Christ (Ephesians 5:11). Although there are many churches of Christ spread out geographically, there is a sense in which there is only one church. The church is the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23), of which there is only one (Ephesians 4:4). Admission into this body is achieved through baptism (1st Corinthians 12:13), the same action whereby one enters Christ (Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3), whereby one is saved (Mark 16:16; 1st Peter 3:21), and whereby sins are expunged (Acts 2:38; 22:16). Thus the one body, the church in its universal sense, consists of all saved people. Inasmuch as the church is the people saved by Christ, the cost of our salvation (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14; 1st Peter 1:18-19) is the same price paid to purchase the church (Acts 20:28): nothing less than the blood of Jesus Christ. The church is, therefore, very valuable to God, and its worth must never be understated. The church is the setting in which God is to be honored, as Paul wrote, "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. We aim to glorify God through our praise of Him (1st Peter 2:9). The church serves an eternal purpose. The apostle Paul said, "now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Ephesians 3:10-11). The reason God established the church, and it was always in His plan to do so, was to make His wisdom known. Thus, "the church of the living God" is identified as "the pillar and ground of the truth" (1st Timothy 3:15), meaning that its mission is to uphold the truth. Each local church can accomplish this goal, fulfilling the Lord's plan of worldwide evangelism (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16). Addressing "the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (1st Thessalonians 1:1), Paul commended their success in spreading the gospel, saying, "from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place" (1st Thessalonians 1:8). It is our goal to accomplish the same as the Thessalonians, broadcasting the truth of the gospel near and far. The Lord also assigned to the church the task of edification, which means to build itself up (Ephesians 4:11-16). This means we promote each other's individual spiritual development (2nd Peter 3:18). We do this by assembling regularly for mutual exhortation (Hebrews 10:24-25). In pursuit of our purposes, we have no use for the denominational churches established by men, nor for their theological institutions, seminaries, or missionary societies because we know Jesus said, "every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted" (Matthew 15:13). We consider His church sufficient for the purposes He gave it to fulfill. In short, the mission of this church is to glorify God (Ephesians 3:21), make known His manifold wisdom (Ephesians 3:10), uphold the truth (1st Timothy 3:15), and build each other up (Ephesians 4:11-16).

WE ARE, BUT WE AREN'T PART 7
Bryan Matthew Dockens

We were established on Pentecost, but we are not "Pentecostal". It was "when the Day of Pentecost had fully come" (Acts 2:1) that the apostles "were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:4), fulfilling what Jesus had promised concerning the beginning of their preaching (Acts 1:8). The gospel was preached that day (Acts 2:14-36), people obeyed (Acts 2:37-47), and thus the church was established on Pentecost.

Those identified as Pentecostals, "believe that through the Holy Spirit, what happened during Pentecost can happen now. In fact, seeking and receiving the gift of tongues is regarded as a sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, itself requisite to full discipleship" (Handbook of Denominations in the United States). Theirs is an erroneous expectation. Concerning spiritual gifts, Paul wrote, "Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away" (1st Corinthians 13:8-10). The end of the partial, that is spiritual gifts, including tongue speaking, would occur with the arrival of the "perfect"', meaning the "complete". When God's word in the New Testament was written down, it replaced those gifts. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2nd Timothy 3:16-17). Since Scripture can make a person complete, the perfect has come; therefore spiritual gifts have been done away.

WE ARE, BUT WE AREN'T PART 6
Bryan Matthew Dockens

The Baptist Church is named for John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, but the church of Christ is named for Christ Himself. John came to "prepare the way of the Lord" (Matthew 3:3), but Jesus is the Lord (Acts 2:36).

We are just Christians (Acts 11:26), members of the body of Christ (1st Corinthians 12:27). We are not specific kinds of Christians, for the scriptures make no reference to denominations. Wearing other names, besides Christ's, is sinfully divisive (1st Corinthians 1:10-17). Emphasis, instead, should be on the oneness that is in Christ's body (Romans 12:4-5; Ephesians 4:4).

We are Christians, but we are not "Christian". The word "Christian" is a noun in its scriptural usage, not an adjective. Whereas a noun is "A word that is used to name a person, place, thing, quality, or action" an adjective "is used to modify a noun" (American Heritage Dictionary). Common use of the word "Christian" includes references to "a Christian home", "Christian principles"
', or "the Christian church" ', but such does not comport with how the word is used in scripture. According to the divine record, "Christians" are what "disciples" are "called" (Acts 11:26), not what homes or principles are called, but what disciples are called. One must be "persuade[d]... to become a Christian" (Acts 26:28). If it cannot be so persuaded, it cannot be a Christian. A Christian is a person. The word does not lend itself to any other use than as a name for a disciple of Christ.

WE ARE, BUT WE AREN'T PART 5
Bryan Matthew Dockens

Christians are repeatedly referred to as "saints" throughout the pages of the New Testament, including Paul's address to the Corinthians, wherein he wrote, "To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours" (1st Corinthians 1:2). A saint is one sanctified, that one is holy, or set apart for God.
Christians are most definitely saints of the latter days, but we dare not endorse the so-called "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" who use the Book of Mormon as their guide. That would only invite doom. (Galatians 1:6-9).

We baptize, but we are not "Baptist". We believe in immersion - for so the word "baptism" is defined - in water (Acts 8:36-39; 10:47-48; 1st Peter 3:20-21), in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38), for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16), to obtain salvation (Mark 16:16; Acts 16:30-33; 1st Peter 3:21), to gain access to Christ (Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:27), and entrance into His body (1st Corinthians 12:13). Those calling themselves "Baptists" do not believe all these things concerning baptism; in particular, they believe salvation occurs before and without baptism.

WE ARE, BUT WE AREN'T PART 4
Bryan Matthew Dockens

The churches borne of the Protestant Reformation are less than five hundred years old, as it was 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, Saxony, Germany. That makes Protestant Churches almost one and a half millennia too young to be Christ's church. Jesus promised to build His church (Matthew 16:18) and baptized believers were being added to it on the day of Pentecost following His ascension (Acts 2). That was almost twenty centuries ago; anything established since isn't Christ's church.

We are latter day saints, but we are not "Mormon". "The latter days" were foretold by Old Testament prophets (Isaiah 2:2-3; Micah 4:1-2) as that time when God's house would be established, His word would go forth from Jerusalem, and all nations would come in. God's house has, indeed, been established; it is the church (1st Timothy 3:15). The word has, in fact, gone forth from Jerusalem (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4, 😎. And, all nations have heard the gospel (Mark 16:15; Romans 1:16; Colossians 1:6, 23). "These last days" are marked as those in which God communicates to man through His Son (Hebrews 1:2). According to the apostle Peter, "the last days" began on Pentecost following Jesus' return to heaven (Acts 2:16-17).

WE ARE, BUT WE AREN'T PART 3

We are universal, but we are not "Catholic". The word
"catholic" means "universal" and so we are. The gospel is worldwide in its scope (Mark 16:15). Since all who obey the gospel are the church, the church is universal; the church is catholic. Yet, scripture does not identify us as the "Catholic Church", much less the "Roman Catholic Church". We are simply "the body of Christ" (1st Corinthians 12:27), which body is the "church" (Colossians 1:18). The church is known by its head, Christ, not its spread, the world, or the universe.

We protest Catholicism, but we are not "Protestant" The errors of Catholic doctrine are many, from deifying the Pope to deifying Mary, to tampering with God's plan for church government, to teaching inherited sin, and an endless list of beliefs and practices founded on human tradition rather than God's word. We protest all these errors, but that does not make for our identity.
The church of Christ is centered on Christ, not on protesting the falsehoods of one particular denomination.

WE ARE, BUT WE AREN'T PART 2
Bryan Matthew Dockens

We serve Jesus of Nazareth, but we are not
"Nazarenes". Jesus was a Nazarene because He was brought up in the city of Nazareth (Matthew 2:23). The Word of God certainly concerns itself with "JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS" (John 19:19; cf. Acts 2:22; 10:38), but His disciples are never properly referred to as "Nazarenes". Only once in scripture are the
people of Christ so called, and that was with derision. In the court of Governor Felix, a Jewish orator named Tertullus accused Paul of being "a plague, a creator of dissension among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes" (Acts 24:5). Christ never called His followers Nazarenes, and Christians never called themselves Nazarenes. Only their enemies called them that.

We evangelize, but we are not "Evangelical". Nowhere in scripture is the church referred to as "Evangelical", but its members are constantly shown to have been evangelizing. The word "evangelize" is the Anglicization of the Greek word "evangelism", meaning "to announce good news ('evangelize') especially the gospel" (Strong), or "to bring good news, to announce glad tidings" (Thayer). The term appears fifty-five times in the New Testament, including the following examples: "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ" (Acts 5:42);
"Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word" (Acts 8:4); "So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans" (Acts 8:25).

Here is an overview of the verses that have been presented questioning why we don't pray to Jesus, and our findings as per putting them in their proper context:

MATTHEW 7:21-23 - Jesus is on earth, delivering or “preaching” the Sermon on the Mount. He’s talking about those who will approach Him on judgment day. This is not a prayer.

ACTS 22:16 - Calling on the name of the Lord – too beseech, evoke, appeal to. This is in reference to confession of Christ before baptism, and not prayer to Jesus.

ROMANS 10:12-13 - Appealing to both the Father and the Son it is repeated from Joel where the “Lord” there is Jehovah – if you pray to Jesus you don’t appeal to both - you would be leaving out the Father

ACTS CHAPTER 9 - Jesus actually talks to Saul and in a ‘vision’ (Acts 9:10) has a conversation with Ananias having to do with sending him to attend to Saul, (later he changes his own name to Paul). These examples are not prayers, and Saul was persecuting the church - It was Christ that came to him not Saul praying to Jesus.

HEBREWS 4:15-16 - We understand the Jesus, being our high priest, mediating on our behalf – allowing us access to God (point A to point B through Christ.) In the Old Testament there is no example of praying to the high priest either.

HEBREWS 7:25 - “Those who come to-God through-Him” (Jesus) Again – He is making intercession for us, on behalf of us, taking it to the Father. Praying to Jesus would then leave out God the Father would it not?

HEBREWS 9:24 - “Jesus appears in the presence of God for us” – again our mediator through Him to God the Father – go between not the final destination. This is not demeaning to Jesus – as He is our only path to the Father.

1 JOHN 2:1 - Jesus Christ the righteous, our advocate with the Father. Mediator – Advocate – Intercessor – same as above verses.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:2 - “Call on the name of Jesus Christ “ - same as Acts 22:16

MATTHEW 11:28 - “Come to Me and I will give you rest” - This is a promise not a prayer. A promise to all who might decide to become a “Christian” that we will have a light burden, an easy yoke, and rest for our souls.

I agree with your comment that these as well as many others suggest approaching Jesus – after all, He is where we find salvation. In MATTHEW 6:9-13 and LUKE 11:1-4 the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to ‘pray’, not teach them a prayer. It is Jesus Himself, our greatest example who gives us this outline form of how to pray starting with, “Our Father” Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name, glorifying God the Father by those very words. By praying to Jesus you are not doing that.

You made the comment that nowhere in the Scriptures did Jesus ever say that we can’t talk or pray to Him. Nowhere in the Scriptures does it say we can’t use wonder bread and purple Kool-Aid for the Lord’s Supper, but we have examples of what they did use i.e. unleavened bread and fruit of the vine – in the same way, we have no example, command, or inference that would have us to believe that Jesus wants us praying to him.

As to what kind of God is Jesus if we don’t pray to Him? He has all authority, yet His focus is to glorify the Father (JOHN 15:7-10)

The next question to ask would be why then are we not praying to the Holy Spirit?

Jesus said in JOHN 14:15 “If you love me keep My commandments” when we do anything, we should ask ourselves, is what I’m doing based on tradition, how we’ve always done it, or how we THINK it should be been done. Are we doing it because it ‘feels’ right? Or is because we are keeping the commandments of Jesus because we love Him? It needs to be His will, His way- never our own.

We should not be thinking beyond what is written.

Lastly, as for hymns, yes we certainly sing songs of praise but because one can sing a lie as well as speak a lie, we do not sing every song just because it’s in our hymnbooks.

First off, they are not inspired by God in the same way that scripture is, so we need to study to show ourselves approved – meaning there are songs that are scripturally inaccurate. If all songs were allowed to be sung in an assembly a visitor might be led astray and even members could get the wrong idea. We will not sing certain songs, or sometimes we will omit a verse or even change the words to make them scripturally accurate.

We are a small congregation and appreciate your questioning our actions. It is important to know why we are doing what we are doing - our purpose is to help one another get to heaven.

This became our study for quite some time and I believe we are doing all that we can to please God in all that we do.
Please keep studying the Bible (our intentions as well) and God bless you always and in all ways.

SHOPPING FOR A CROSS
Kyle Campbell

Jesus commanded His followers, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" (Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23). Too many of us want to go shopping for just the right cross rather than take up the cross of self-denial to which He referred.

Some people want a vinyl-padded cross that is not too heavy. Others look for a small, flat cross which they can put out of sight when they do not want to attract attention.
Still others look for a jeweled cross which can make them part of the fashionable "in" crowd.

The cross of authentic discipleship is a plain, rough, wooden cross which takes a lot of effort to carry. This is the type of cross on which Jesus was crucified. This is the cross of discipleship which His followers must carry. One important difference is that Jesus Himself has promised to stand with us and help us bear the load. This same one who directed "Take up his cross" also declared, "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:30).
