President Dallin H. Oaks,

“It is not enough for anyone just to go through the motions. The commandments, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly Father desires us to become.”

What can we learn from Paul’s teachings in Romans about how to become more converted?

The Father of our spirits desires His children to be safely gathered home. Our Heavenly Father’s plan for safely gathering His children to our heavenly home is not based on worldly success, economic status, education, race, or gender. Father’s plan is based on righteousness, keeping His commandments, and receiving sacred ordinances and honoring the covenants we make.

Elder Cook teaches that the Lord expects those who have received His gospel to urgently strive to be an example that will help others come to God.

You may need to help class members understand that being “no respecter of persons” does not mean that God blesses everyone equally regardless of our actions. He wants all of His children to accept His gospel, but the fulness of the blessings of the gospel are reserved for those who make and keep covenants with Him.

“We can find spiritual renewal in the Sabbath and also in the temple, the house of the Lord. As we step into the temple, we step out of the world. We eat the nourishing bread and drink the pure water of spiritual peace. We sometimes speak of temple work, but we could also speak of temple rest...I encourage each of you to seek rest and renewal each week in Sabbath worship and at the temple.”

Prophets, apostles, and Church leaders talk about the importance and blessings of the temple.

Readjusting our desires to give highest priority to the things of eternity is not easy. We are all tempted to desire that worldly quartet of property, prominence, pride, and power. We might desire these, but we should not fix them as our highest priorities. Those whose highest desire is to acquire possessions fall into the trap of materialism. They fail to heed the warning “Seek not after riches nor the vain things of this world”.

To achieve our eternal destiny, we will desire and work for the qualities required to become an eternal being.

President Russell M. Nelson has taught that “entering into a covenant relationship with God binds us to Him in a way that makes everything about life easier.” He did not say that making covenants makes life easy, “but yoking yourself with the Savior means you have access to His strength and redeeming power.”

Elder Andersen teaches that placing Jesus Christ first in our lives is a quest that continues throughout our lives and requires not only our commitment but also help from heaven.

Temptations?
“When the storms in life come, you can be steady because you are standing on the rock of your faith in Jesus Christ. That faith will lead you to daily repentance and consistent covenant keeping. Then you will always remember Him. And through the storms of hatred and wickedness, you will feel steady and hopeful.”

Weaknesses?
“Keeping our covenants allows the Savior’s power to cleanse us as we learn through experience—whether it is a minor misjudgment or a major failing. Our Redeemer is there to catch us when we fall if we turn to Him.”

How we can overcome challenges, temptations, and weaknesses through Jesus Christ.

From the cross on Calvary, the Savior announced, “It is finished.” Then His spirit left His body, and His mortal remains were placed lovingly in a tomb. He taught us a lesson by what He did in three days in the spirit world, before His Resurrection, which I remember whenever I am tempted to feel that I have finished some hard task in His service and deserve a rest. The Savior’s example gives me courage to press on. His labors in mortality were finished, but He entered the spirit world determined to continue His glorious work to save souls.

We are to learn our duty from the Lord, and then we are to act in all diligence, never being lazy or slothful.

A familiar example of losing ourselves in the service of others—this one not unique to Latter-day Saints—is the sacrifice parents make for their children. Mothers suffer pain and loss of personal priorities and comforts to bear and rear each child. Fathers adjust their lives and priorities to support a family. The gap between those who are and those who are not willing to do this is widening in today’s world.

Our Savior teaches us to follow Him by making the sacrifices necessary to lose ourselves in unselfish service to others.
