A few days ago I talked about being able to “Think.” Being able to think for yourself is step one in the humanistic, simple mere human aspect of life. (You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? - 1Corinthians 3:3) As I stated before, there are a great deal of people who do not have the ability to think for themselves. They are controlled by outside influences that manipulate their minds for a multiplicity of reasons. Once again, that’s the simple 101 aspect of life, being able to think.
The next level is discernment. Discernment is defined as “the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure; an act of perceiving something; a power to see what is not evident to the average mind.” The definition also stresses accuracy, as in “the ability to see the truth.” Spiritual discernment is the ability to tell the difference between truth and error. It is basic to having wisdom.
It is not wrong to possess knowledge or have an education, and it is not wrong to use reason and logic to solve problems. I am at times a very logical individual and I strongly believe in education. However, spiritual discernment cannot be attained that way. It must be given by the revelation of Jesus Christ to the believer, and then developed by way of training in righteousness (Hebrews 5:14) and prayer (Philippians 1:9). Hebrews 5:11-14 shows how spiritual discernment is developed. Don’t allow yourself to be a simple average Christian who allows outside influences and influencers to control you through simple manipulation. I have seen it time and time again. People who believe whoever and whatever. People who love you Sunday morning and hate you Sunday night because someone told them not to love you anymore. (Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity Hebrews 6:1) It’s time out for the simple, average, level one, easily mislead, itching ear, non discerning, worldly, lead by their feelings and emotions, non biblical, believe anything, immature church going Christian who can be influenced by simplest of those who bring the simplest of manipulation. I have seen too many Christians who believe someone just because they stand in a pulpit and talk about God or have a title in front of their name. Just because someone bats their eyes, cries on your shoulder and gives you a sob story that pulls on your emotions, you believe them. Just because someone knows two scriptures and one of those is Jesus wept, (John 11:35), we believe them. I leave you with this!
(11) Concerning this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull and sluggish in [your spiritual] hearing and disinclined to listen. (12) For though by this time you ought to be teachers [because of the time you have had to learn these truths], you actually need someone to teach you again the elementary principles of God’s word [from the beginning], and you have come to be continually in need of milk, not solid food. (13) For everyone who lives on milk is [doctrinally inexperienced and] unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a spiritual infant. (14) But solid food is for the [spiritually] mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.
