Summary of Genesis 6:1-8

The collective effort of humanity in sin is to war with God and bring about the destruction of His good creation. That may seem like an extreme statement, but it is the natural conclusion of everyone believing God is holding out on them.

We believe the good things God made are ours to use outside of his purpose. This leads to massive amounts of violence in which God is not indifferent to. The greatest achievements of a prideful humanity apart from God is worth the total destruction of all creation.

Yet despite this correct judgement on the total depravity of humanity, God provides a way to change the destiny of people who lay down their weapons and follow Him.

Summary of Genesis 4

We looked at the tragic story of Cain killing his brother Abel. The most identifiable problem in humanity is we seek to sate our every desire as the purpose of our lives. Cain wanted to be recognized for his work, even more than he wanted to please God. He wasn't recognized, and this leads to him killing Abel.

The irony of sacrifice, like Cain's, is the goal appears to have communion with God. God even comes to Cain to warn him about these desires he has! He received what the goal was! However his aim for his desires outweighed his desire to know God.

Our aim should be to seek fellowship with God, even at the expense of our own perceived "best life."

Summary from Genesis 3

Our natural inclination is that God is holding out on us. It is from this position that all our suffering begins.

In the garden we were tempted ironically. The serpent tempted us with being like God. The reason it is ironic is that we are already the most like God of all of the created things. The things we choose over God will only lead us away from the joy of everything (including these things).

Following Christ is the only way in which we will truly experience life.

Summary from last night:

If your presuppositions don’t come from God (as is shown in His Word) you will always operate outside of His will.

The order and substance to everything is brought about by the decree of God, and not man. Creation is yours for appreciating as a gift, and for care and attention as it’s caretaker. People exist so as to glorify God. The primary way we do that is to reflect his image in it.

These are healthy presumptions to get from Genesis 1 (as well as others discussed)

Why share the gospel?

- We share because there is a guarantee of the audience for ALL who call on the name of the Lord!
- We share as an outflow of love to make God’s glory known.
- We share as we are compelled by the Holy Spirit who dwells within His people.
